Alaskan Pipeline
http://rogerhedgecock.com/content/view/177/77/ ^ | Roger Hedgecock

Posted on 05/28/2006 10:30:52 PM PDT by CAWats

The following is in mp3 format on rogerhedgecock.com on 05-25-2006:

When the Alaskan Pipeline was being built the environmental whackos whined the pipeline whould cut the grazing land of the caribou in half and the caribou would die out.

So to appease them, the pipeline was put on stilts where it crossed the caribou graze lands. What happened? The caribou decided to gather at the spot where the pipeline came down to the ground. Seems the caribou liked to lie against the pipeline because the pipe was warm from the oil passing through it. The liked it so much they starting mating like crazy next to the warm pipeline and now the area is overrun with caribou. They don't know what else to do except harvest them.

The Alaskan oil pipeline good for the environment? You bet! Will the media fail to report such good news? You bet!

Sounds like the pipeline was a boon for the subsistence hunters up there in more ways than one.

I wonder what caribou tastes like.

Also - more calves survived, as the mothers had them by the warm pipelines - where, also, the grass stayed green.

I remember seeing the photo, also, of the grizzlies that were going to be "impacted" - They were ;o) They love to climb up on top of the warmer pipes and pad along for miles, single file. It's warm on their tootsies.

Regardless of taste, caribou appears to be the premier source for winter clothing...

It's insulation characteristics, water-resistance, and ability to "breathe", keeping body perspiration from accumulating have made it the top choice for winter skins..

I thought it was more like a sweet liver. I didn't care for it. Now moose on the other hand was outstanding.

As for the "stilts" the pipeline is on, they are radiators used to dissipate the heat so it will not melt the permafrost. The caribou don't care about the pipeline and do tend to gather around it when it is cold.

I once asked an Alaska Fish and Game guy why they didn't spray the mosquitoes up there. He told me that they help control the caribou herds. The evirowackos in Washington and San Francisco are clueless about Alaska. All they know is what some Marxist professor spews at them in the classroom.

The crew chiefs used to tear me up cooking their caribou burgers in the tents out in the field. (222nd AVN). That meat is definitely sweet.

I've never had elk, but I have had venison and antelope.

Thanks to all for the info.

I miss being up there - the Athabaskans have a Memorial Day Pow Wow that is not to be missed (just north of Anchorage - well - a few miles - way past Wasilla). I - as a Vet carried the Flag every year - and was Chief BBQ Cook.

I do miss them and revel in the stories and comradery and openess they displayed. A great and declining people.

Sweat lodges - whew - ya wanna do some work on yourself? None better and no psych necessary.

Exactly. I miss Alaska too but my current job allows me to deal with the Navajos everyday. You'd be surprised. If you go to the cemetery between Window Rock and Fort Defiance, each grave has a full sized American flag flying over it for Memorial Day. They are very patriotic and a lot of them are currently serving in the military.

"My sister was bit by a moose once."

Every year there are tourist that see a baby moose and just have to hug it - the baby is willing - Mom on the other hand - 40 yards away - covers the 40 yards in 1.2 seconds and the hugee wakes up in the hospital- if they survive - do not hug baby moose - leave wild life alone.

There are city moose and country moose - don't mess with either.
