This week was one of the most exciting that we've had.
WARNING: There is a lot of excellent stuff in this thread, so be sure you have the time to enjoy it. A great group of FReepers made it so.
Just last Tuesday the Olney FReep had only two Freepers who planned to attend Saturday. A call for 'boots on the corner' went out and was answered by dedicated FReepers. They came from all over the East Coast. They took time out from their vacation to attend.
10 FReepers gathered this week in Olney. There were three regulars, Lurker Bill who knew of our need and took some time out of his busy day, but still had to leave a little early, [Mrs] Trooprally ([Mrs] T), myself, and the others included Kristinn, Jimmy Valentine's Brother (JVB), where in MD are you from?, BufordP from Virginia, out by Dulles Airport, Doctor Raoul (DR) from Philly, Just A Nobody (JANB) from below Richmond and first timers in Olney, UncleHamBone and wife from New Hampshire.
A BIG THANKS to all the FReepers that heeded our call on this Memorial Day Weekend when I'm sure you all had vacation and family plans.
BELOW TOP: Pic of our group with the three banners up before Uncle HamBone Bone & wife and local showed up. Banners were a great backdrop for this Memorial Day Weekend. I took the pic and thought that Kristinn and JANB were in camera view finder, but they weren't. Sorry. From left to right: DR, BufordP, [Mrs] T with JVB behind her, JANB's chair (she knows how to FReep in luxury) and Lurker Bill. BELOW BOTTOM: The Steam Pot sign is back.
Then we had a local show up with her niece. She had driven past us the last several weeks and honked for us. She finally came with their own home made signs and stood with us for about an hour. She has our info and promised to bring some friends with her next week. The niece (10 or so) also made her own sign with red, white & blue twirlies.
The lady's husband was a "tunnel rat" in Vietnam. For those who don't know, a 'tunnel rat' is a soldier that went down into the Vietcong's tunnels to kill them. The tunnels were sometimes so small our soldiers had to crawl through them. Our soldiers carried a flashlight, a pistol and a knife, that's all, no helmet, no flack vest. The tunnels were too small for anything else. Our soldiers never knew what was behind the next pitch black turn. Hand to hand combat was a norm.
Sometimes the tunnels opened up to a cavern that was loaded with VC. The 'tunnel rat' had to fight them all by himself.
FYI: The History Channel had a special on 'Tunnel Rats' that was very informative.
I told her to give her husband a double Thanks for his service.
UncleHamBone & wife showed up a little bit later. They got turned around in D.C., easy to do even if one knows D.C., and arrived a little late.
That gave us 12 to the moonbats 11. We out numbered them when I thought we were going to be short FReepers.
We also had several people walk over to us and Thank us. One guy stopped by and Thanked us for being there, and especially the few former military that were with us. He is a guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington. We thanked him back and shook his hand. We told him about Phelps' clan being at Arlington Cemetery and that we'll be there to block passerbys' view of them. If we can't block the view, we'll drown out their chants. Rumor has it that Rolling Thunder will be there.
BELOW: I wonder if any of these guys will be there. They waved as they headed towards D.C.
One lady stopped in the parking lot as we were packing up. Her son is occasionally at Walter Reed as an out patient. She has also seen us there and said that the wounded also know we are there. She said that the wounded's spirit is raised tremendously knowing that we care enough to stay so late at WR, no matter what the weather is.
Another person to come by, stopped because he recognized Kristinn. It was Don Irvine of Accuracy In Media. While Don didn't hold a sign he talked with Kristinn for about 10 minutes.
Did I mention yet, all pics are by [Mrs] T.
Cigars flowed freely this Saturday. BELOW are the THREE AMIGOS, er POTE, oh heck, PROUD AMERICANS!!!
BELOW: UncleHamBone and wife. Hope you all enjoyed yourself. I'm in the back ground talking to the Tomb of the Unknowns guard. Note that he is taller than me (I'm 6' - 2"). All the guards have to be some minimum height.
BELOW: Myself and Lurker Bill setting up the banners. [Mrs] T told him that he is very photogenic and cute. Where did that come from [Mrs] T?
BELOW: Lurker Bill standing his position.
I also knew that the day was going to be exciting when I learn that DR, JVB and BufordP were coming. They didn't let me down. With Kristinn and JANB, the 5-some hollered many chants at the "Quackers". BELOW: JVB getting psyched up before the FReep.
Some of the chants were:
- Sex, drugs, Geritol, you old hippies go home
- Got FReedom? Don't thank a Quaker
- Quakers lied, Cambodians died, and now you lie again
- Is it Kent State yet?
- We're No. 1, you're No. 2 (and they gave the 'V' for Victory sign)
- Faker Quakers, go home
- We don't like your oats
- Quakers are parasites of freedom
- If you are stupid and you know it go like this (Again, they gave the 'V' for Victory sign) BELOW LEFT
- Anyone who can't get a date for tonight lift your arms BELOW RIGHT
BELOW LEFT: Back of JANB, Kristinn, DR and BufordP. BELOW RIGHT: Kristinn with great Memorial Day Weekend sign.
Unfortunately, the moonbats were there.
BELOW TOP: Moonbats gathering like flies on you know what. BELOW BOTTOM: The gang is all here.
BELOW LEFT: Moonbats set up their artillery riddled sign. BELOW RIGHT: Our chanters are right, Quakers are fakers. Sign says "Peace is Patriotic" while their religious decree says that they are world citizens, not any particular country citizen.
BELOW LEFT: Chief Grumpy rolling up sign thinking "I'm going over there and beat them over their heads because of their danm chants", and Barking Waveman looking unhappy. Maybe his car doesn't have A/C on these warm nights. BELOW RIGHT: Sitting Moonbat finally gets a sign to hold. The learning curve from sitting to sitting with a sign took several weeks. But she is really thinking, "Where is the TP, I just soiled my pants cause of those damn chants", and old guy thinking "Those damn chants are tiring. This sign is getting heavy".
There, done with the token moonbat pics.
After an exciting FReep, we all went to dinner at the new Olney Tavern. Basically an upscale, clean, greasy spoon place. [Mrs] T and I wanted to Thank all those who heeded our call for 'boots on the corner' and took time out from their busy Memorial Day Weekend.
BELOW LEFT: UncleHamBone & wife. BELOW RIGHT: [Mrs] T enjoying her chocolate-chocolate dessert and DR. DR giving the "V" for 'Victory' sign.
BELOW LEFT: DR, JANB in shadow, Wife & UncleHamBone, BufordP & myself. BELOW RIGHT: BufordP's neat t-shirt.
BELOW: UncleHamBone, Kristinn, back from outside while talking on his cell phone, and BufordP.
Hey PleaDeal, this next part is especially for you. You missed a good Saturday in Olney!!
BELOW: Something we saw in the parking lot after we had dinner. Apparently Olney Tavern sponsored an antique car show. Enjoy some of the pics of probably 40 cars & cycles. BufordP was in FReeper heaven looking at the cars and explaining the history of many to me.
After all is said and done, after the most different and exciting Olney FReep, we got home about 7:30. Those with longer trips, much later.
REMEMBER
Next Saturday, same place, Georgia Avenue, MD Rte. 97 and MD Rte. 108 in Olney, MD
Same time, 3 PM to 4:30 PM
As always, the D.C. Chapter's rules for protesting will be in effect. Briefly, they are: No violence, no profanity, no racism, no provocations, obey the law and treat all law enforcement officers with respect.
As the lady we talked to after the Olney FReep, the wounded troops do talk about us and we do lift their spirits.
But one or two FReepers per corner is pitiful. We are there for the troops who go through a lot worst than a few hours we do each week.
Join us between 6:30 PM til 9:30 PM at the main gate.
Thank you so much for being there! You guys rock!!
What a day you had!
Nice report.
