The crowd opposed to gay rights and the rally included women who held up religious icons. They were joined by men in Cossack traditional dress — white sheepskin hats and black-and-red tunics.
Police quickly moved in as the first half-dozen rally participants arrived carrying flowers. They were joined by about 100 religious and nationalist extremists who kicked and punched some of the activists.
As Volker Beck, a Green member of Germany's national parliament, was giving a TV interview, about 20 nationalist youths surrounded him and punched him in his face, bloodying his nose.

Not for the masses in Russian society anyway. Homosexual activists are simply seeking victim status wherever they can in the hope they can evoke by sympathetic moral relative argument special "rights" premised in the choice to engage in homosexual activity... IT will never happen...
Maybe they saw how far "dialog" helped us in the US to preserve traditional values and realized it was a lost cause.

There are ways to express one's disapproval without starting fistfights. In the late 80s in Pittsburgh there was some demonstration on a related topic [must be AIDS], and I happened to pass by it on a narrow sidewalk going to a bookstore. One of demonstrators tried to give me some of their literature. I refused to take it and told him that I was not interested - and that was both sufficient and civilized.
Poland isn't going for it, either.

YUP -I would say that many eastern Europeans have a certain well developed distaste and perhaps kneejerk reaction to even the thought of being imposed upon to accept anything they do not want to recognize e.g. "homosexual rights"...

I have rarely known a Left-wing group to criticize the Soviet union or Russia.
I doubt it. I was born and grew up in that same Moscow - and IMHO these criminal lumpens would not know "traditional values" if they hit them in the forehead. I saw their spitting image predecessors decades ago, and from this report they have not changed much.
Openly flaunting in public (in front of other people's children) that you cram foreign objects and other people's bodily appendages into your rectum is hardly “civilized” either. In fact, it is worse.

Do not tie yourself in a knot about gay marriage- the participants will be [and already are] punishing themselves: divorce settlements are neither cheap nor pleasant, and their unions are not among the longest lasting. Just sit back, grab a cold beer and contemplate their misery. Absolutely no need to throw punches.
