'So Help Me God' The "Ten Commandments Judge" battles to become Alabama's governor.
Wall Street Journal ^ | May 27, 2006 | KYLE WINGFIELD

MONTGOMERY, Ala.--Most politicians would kill for--or spend millions of dollars to acquire--the name recognition Roy Moore has in Alabama. Not necessarily the kind of name recognition, mind you. Just the level.

That's because here, and across the country, he's known not just as Roy Moore, but as "Roy Moore, Ten Commandments Judge"--the Southern Baptist-cum-chief justice of Alabama who defied a federal court order to remove his 2 1/2-ton monument to the Commandments from the state courthouse, and lost his job as a result. It's a moniker that wins him automatic support in some quarters, and deafens ears before he even opens his mouth in others. And as he runs for the Republican nomination for governor in his native state, that notoriety is both a blessing and a curse.

Yeah, imagine that: someone running for the 'Pub nom' that sounds like an actual Conservative...will miracles never cease.

Religious fundamentalism does not equate to political conservatism. As has been said in other venues in other ways, "I have met conservatism, and Moore is not it".

Moore can win only if he concentrates on other issues.

Speaking of the Court case encourages the view that he is a "one trick pony" without depth and wide qualification for the office.

Besides, supporters of his stand are "in the bag". It's the rest of the voters he wants.

Good luck to him.

That's all he is. Moore is a Protestant Christian who looks down his nose at every other religion and even other Christian denominations.

He's a demagogue, a la George Wallace, and deserves the whippin' he's going to get on June 6.

Judging from the story it looks like Moore would love to concentrate on other issues but that his 10 Commandment reputation preceeds him. And he's still trailing almost 3 to 1.

I have never watched one minute of Idol which is no small feet living in the belly of the beast (i.e. Hollywood, CA.)

And, yes, I'm proud of that ;)

He's a great man, but I am not sure the people of any state in the U.S. have the wisdom to select him.

It was apparent from the start that he had higher ambitions, hence disobeying the law with the ten commandment thing.

George Wallace is an apt comparison.

Then I guess everything he says in the actual article is a lie...

You mean this>

And Alabamians have always dared defend our rights, whether it be Martin Luther King, or what I did, or the beginning of the Civil War. We dare defend our rights."

What "rights" was Alabama defending at the beginning of the Civil War?

Or how about this quote:

"Every function of government is related" to the acknowledgment of God, he says.

How about this quote:

Tyrants are those who put [themselves] above the law of God and become all-powerful. They control everything--your life, your liberty, your pursuit of happiness. In this country, those things are given by God and government is there to secure them."

He seems not to understand a fundamental principle that the Constitution is the supreme law of the land, not the Bible.

"And as for the budget deficit, Mr. Moore believes that God is on the side of lower taxes and spending".

That is one of most absurd statements I have ever heard. The Almighty who created the universe and everything in it is on the side of lower taxes and spending? Of course it gets worse including his desire to see Christianity the sole religion.

No sir, I have seen conservatism, and Moore definitely is not it.

"I think this guy is an Ego Maniac and I don't trust him."

Would you rather have an 'Ego Maniac' that stands firm and resolute on his convictions or the spineless GOP Senate Ego Maniacs who care only about re election and their cush jobs. Give me multiple clones of Roy Moore and stack the halls of govt. with his brand of man.

Is that you, Roseanne Barr circa 1980's?

Your original coment about "other religions" made no sense. I was addressing your hippy lack of logic and knowledge.

You are still a liberal (hippy) in your understanding of our nation. You still got the hippy brainwashing deep inside.

That's OK, just don't pretend to be recovering, or pretend not to be a liberal.

re 34: Give me multiple clones of Roy Moore and stack the halls of govt. with his brand of man.

Roy Moore refused to obey the law; violated his oath of office; and didn't even have the deceny to resign on a matter of principle--he was removed from office in an 8-0 vote by the other Alabama Supreme Court justices.

Moore does not in any way represent true conservative values as any conservative I know understands them (respect for the law, even if you disagree with it, honoring your oath of office). It seems Alabama conservatives see through his charade of wrapping the shroud of Christian-ness around himself in a shameful, sanctimonious, display of piety, hypocrisy, and demagogy.

Not to mention his crude attempts to demonize his opponents as "anti-God; anti-American; and anti-Christian".

"I-am-the-chief-justice, I-am-the-law" Roy Moore richly deserves the defeat that is going to be handed to him by the voters.

My how he rubs you the wrong way. As for me, there are few men alive today that I respect more than Roy Moore.
