Let's just hope they play better than they did against Morocco...
Losing 1-0 in the last 20 seconds.
They're not going to get to the second round that way.

I don't care about Chavez, or this game. Luis Aparicio and Ozzie Guillen came from Venezuela. As long as they keeps sending people like that to the White Sox, they must be doing something right.

Third pic down...
I'm not sure that the team walking out onto the field holding the hands of little boys really helps cement soccer's place as a sport.
Besides, there's a Canes game tonight. ;)

I recognize the Guilford (Amer Revolutionary) Flag . . . but what is the red St. Andrew's Cross with the hackles on it?

CHAVEZ must truly hate those Sam's Army pictures.
Sam's Army is the largest US national team supporters group

The Venezuelan government is backing the tournament in a big way (yes, Hugo Chavez is a soccer fan), and the push is on to present a competitive team. Venezuela has never made an impact in international soccer, but the national team has improved greatly in recent years and could spring some surprises as the host country.

Looks like the Cross of Burgundy.
"During the reign of King Charles I from 1516 to 1556, Spanish interest in the new world increased. It was under this flag that the explorer Alonso De Pineda explored the Gulf of Mexico from Florida to Vera Cruz in 1519 and the conquest of Mexico by Hernando Cortes in 1519-21. "

Well, I'm getting somewhere.
The hackled or rough St. Andrew's Cross ("saltire reguly") is known as the Burgundian Cross.
It was the Spanish military flag from the 1500s up until 1743, and still used by the Spanish Air Force.
What it's doing there, I don't know.

Beat me by five seconds.
I stopped to read about the Duke of Burgundy and his marriage into the Spanish royal house . . . < g >
Maybe there's a Spaniard sitting in the stands with the Americans?
