Iraq supports Iran's right to pursue nuclear research, its new foreign minister said today, taking a position at odds with that of the Bush administration.
The foreign minister, Hoshiyar Zebari, spoke during a visit to Baghdad by Iran's foreign minister, Manoucher Mottaki, that marked the reconciliation of two countries that fought a long and bloody war two decades ago.
According to news service accounts, Mr. Zebari said that Iraq does not want "any of our neighbors to have weapons of mass destruction."
But he also confirmed "the right of the republic of Iran and the right of any other state to have scientific and technological abilities to research in the field of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes."
The United States and Europe have insisted that Iran give up its program of nuclear research. Iran says the program is meant only to give it the ability to generate nuclear energy and denies it is seeking weapons.

I don't know anyone opposed to Iran generating electricity or doing nuclear research for peaceful purposes (energy, medical, and the like).
This is just the press spinning things, as usual, so that whatever anyone says or does is contrarian to George Bush.
The temptation to build WMD by the unscrupulous simply can't be ignored. The world must be safe from dictators and religious fanatics.
I doubt ANY Iraqi supports Iran getting 'da bomb'.
Iraq would be a first prime candidate for an Iranian test site, subsequent to Israel of course.
More BS from NYT.
Properly stated, the civilized world via the U.N. are trying to be assured that the government of Iran ARE peaceful in their nuclear endeavors.
Iran is the entity opposing the guarantee that their endeavors are peaceful!
Of course most know that Iran isn't promoting peaceful consideration toward their endeavors for if so, their President wouldn't have stated his fervor in public for the annihilation of the state of Israel.
What the Iraqi government is stating is that it's the right of a sovereign nation to promote their technological advances ONLY!
Clearly the NYT had an agenda in the way they presented this, but my understanding is that given Iran's refusal to agree to a non-weaponized program, we're opposed to a nuclear Iran, period. Sensible, given our experience with North Korea.
"sensible" is only one word that adds credence to prudence by sovereign nations and their diplomats when it comes to Iran.
Well put S.
CLUE TO NYT: The US and some sane represenatitives of the international community are opposed to a nuclear program without inspections and monitoring to indicate peaceful development. Highly enriched uranium-- which is not necessary to generate electricity-- is a problem. It is a self evident problem to everyone except grand deceivers like the NYT.
It might be worth noting that Iran's president has expressed intentions to wipe one of its neighbors off the map. For some "extremists" this is construed as a hostile motive in global affairs.
Since that is all they know how to do, and they haven't even accomplished that yet, I'd have to say I disagree with your sentiment.
