Scientists Predict How To Detect A Fourth Dimension Of Space
Science Daily ^ | May 25, 2006 | Unattributed (Duke University)

Posted on 05/25/2006 1:35:30 PM PDT by Ben Mugged

Scientists at Duke and Rutgers universities have developed a mathematical framework they say will enable astronomers to test a new five-dimensional theory of gravity that competes with Einstein's General Theory of Relativity.

Charles R. Keeton of Rutgers and Arlie O. Petters of Duke base their work on a recent theory called the type II Randall-Sundrum braneworld gravity model. The theory holds that the visible universe is a membrane (hence "braneworld") embedded within a larger universe, much like a strand of filmy seaweed floating in the ocean. The "braneworld universe" has five dimensions -- four spatial dimensions plus time -- compared with the four dimensions -- three spatial, plus time -- laid out in the General Theory of Relativity.

The framework Keeton and Petters developed predicts certain cosmological effects that, if observed, should help scientists validate the braneworld theory. The observations, they said, should be possible with satellites scheduled to launch in the next few years.

If the braneworld theory proves to be true, "this would upset the applecart," Petters said. "It would confirm that there is a fourth dimension to space, which would create a philosophical shift in our understanding of the natural world."

~snip~ "When we estimated how far braneworld black holes might be from Earth, we were surprised to find that the nearest ones would lie well inside Pluto's orbit," Keeton said.

Petters added, "If braneworld black holes form even 1 percent of the dark matter in our part of the galaxy -- a cautious assumption -- there should be several thousand braneworld black holes in our solar system."

Did you ever read James Hogan's The Genesis Machine?

Actually that one is sitting next to my reading/smoking chair in the garage at home. :) .... Was it ia hoax .... or would they really have pulled the trigger? We'll never know.

Does any critter exist in only the 2nd or 1st dimension that we can perceive that cannot percieve us?

I would suppose that in the 1st dimension which would be a single point that it would exist only unto itself and nothing else. Much the same for the second dimension which is existence on a single plane within time and space. Any critter that existed on that level would not be the same as life or existence within the third dimension. Your image on a mirror is a single slice or picture of view on a single plane. If you could make a single layer of atoms reflect light and as thin as that might be it would still have the volume of the atoms and the second dimension has no volume. It only has a single dimension stretched out to infinity on a single plane or level of existence. It has not matter within it.

Only the third dimension allows for physical properties of atoms and particles in motion which than includes the laws of time and space and gravity and light and energy, etc...One could be philosophical and say that our spirit or soul, that which makes up our existence outside our body is a fourth dimensional existence. We occupy our body to exist and perceive the third dimension of creation much the same as our spirit puts on a glove. Our eyes, ears, body sense the third dimension but we have no sense to realize the full existence of forth dimension reality other than our mind and imagination.

That is the realm of God who is beyond the physical world. He can change the properties of matter at will. I would suggest that in the book of Genesis after the great flood God promised never to destroy the world by flood again. As a sign He created the first rainbow or prism affect. It would seem that rainbows or the ability to diffract light into a spectrum did not occur prior to this. So in an instance He created the ability to diffract light with water and thus changed the properties of matter and physics at His command by His will. IMHO

"Where'd you get that explanation? I really like that one because it allows me to'see' the idea."

I reasoned it out once when, I too, was having trouble visualizing the idea. Spread it around if you like it.

Please do but you should be aware that my kids think I'm an idiot.

The slices of bread...now I get. Yet the infinity of space I believe goes on forever. How would one go about moving between dimensions? That's the ultimate trip as far as I'm concerned. One would have to have a very far advanced concept of space and time. I love thinking about it though.

Take a point in space. Make believe it is a magical permanent marker point. Now move the point in a direction. When you're done moving it we'll see a magic marker line. Now move the magic marker line and when your done we'll have a magic marker plane hanging out somehwere up above. Take the magic marker plane and move it through space and we have a solid. Now move the solid and whether the trailing edge or leading plane of the solid is the permanent magic marker or the entire solid is we will see what?:-}

My limited brain simply sees another solid. But if there is a fourth spatial dimension then there are certainly n more dimension and n more headaches to contend with.

Now back to the three dimensional fence on the southern border in real time.

"We control the horizontal. We control the vertical."

There are two dimensions right there. It ran on Saturday nights during 1963-1964, so that covers time. Obviously, the fourth dimension must be COLOR.

I don't think so.

Only the third dimension allows for physical properties of atoms and particles in motion which than includes the laws of time and space and gravity and light and energy, etc...

So the 1st 2 dimensions don't really exist, they are imaginary because nothing exists in only one or two dimensions?

Wouldn't it be that the existence of a 4th dimensional object appear to violate the laws of physics in this universe? If you dip a sphere through a 2-D surface, then from the perspective of the 2-D world, the circle appears to be expanding & contracting seemingly out of nowhere in defiance of the laws of physics in the 2-D world.

Perhaps this Braneworld is where matter / antimatter particles that pop out of nowhere come from?

Either way, I bet that if the Braneworld theory were confirmed, we'd have our solution to space travel right there. If we can't alter the speed of light, might as well as alter the distance.

No matter how they try, no one can explain 4 dimensions in a way that I can understand.

Understanding is over-rated in modern physics. Settle for appreciating.

Besides....matter can neither be created or destroyed.

Sure it can. The transistors in your computer wouldn't be working if matter weren't being constantly created and destroyed.
