ATLANTA - Former president Carter, a Democrat and frequent critic of President Bush, sees eye-to-eye with him on immigration.
Carter on Wednesday called the Republican president's commitment to immigration reform "quite admirable," saying he agrees with Bush's support of a system that would eventually grant citizenship to some illegals.
The Senate is set to vote as early as Thursday on a bill that calls for tougher border security as well as an eventual chance at citizenship for millions of men and women in the country illegally.
The law should secure the nation's borders while "at the same time treating those who are here with respect and giving them some hope for the future," Carter said.
The Senate plan, which closely mirrors Bush's own proposal, faces an uncertain fate in the House, where representatives have passed legislation that would expose all illegal immigrants to felony charges.
Carter spoke at the close of a three-day forum of international human rights workers at The Carter Center in Atlanta. Human rights activists from 22 countries attended the forum.

Oh yeah, it used to be that Bush was so smart, he would maneuver people around by saying things the opposite of what he really wanted, NOW the libs try to split the Rino's from the Conservatives, by telling them he agrees with Bush. Sure are a lot of manipulative geniuses out there, I just would not have believed that Carter or GW was that damn good.
It's for the cause, Brother!
Add this gem:
(XHD in court!)
Any person who presents a fraudulent document to obtain a Certificate of Title for a motor vehicle is guilty of a felony.
I was in court one afternoon when the judge sentenced the perp and confiscated his new Firebird!
The state sold the Firebird and the perp still had to pay off the car loan!
The car dealer then sued the perp in civil court.... And won.
Most of these illegals can be sued in civil court for a vast array of illegal acts.
--
One scam that work with shyster attorneys is to wreck a vehicle - then deduct it as an "uninsured loss" - The bonus [2-Fer!] is the civil suit against the unsuspecting driver for "physical injuries", and "mental trauma" of everyone they can squeeze into the vehicle.
--
Sooner or later I believe we will see insurance companies sued in class actions by honest driver policyholders - as the insurance companies actually profit bigtime in high accident and theft areas.
Try NJ, NY, MA, CA, IL.....
This is a new low for Bush when Jimmuh Carter agrees with him on any issue.
It worked pretty good for a while. At least it did until a car load of them were turned into a gooey pink paste when the semi behind them flattened the car they were driving.
L
What a racket!
Have you noticed the biggest whiners are those who live the furthest from the border and have only just recently started having an influx of illegals. The calmest among us are those who've been living with the problem for years.
It's been proven many times on FR that President Bush is single handedly responsible for the decline and fall of the American dream, for Ron Howard producing "The DaVinci Code" and for their girl friends/wives/themselves having cellulite.
"The Dixie Hens are from Texas, and they don't back this president."
Well, there's an exception to every rule, and this must be it. LOL.
You mean that old commie Goobers Carter is still alive, creating problems for his country.
I live a stone's throw from the northern border. This is a problem that will only grow worse by politicians fudging around with it. Bush realizes, as I do, that the only workable solution is to compromise. Extreme measures are only going to compound the problem, moreso than doing nothing at all.
Ahem....most of them are already felons.
I say we make them legal by transfering them to a country where they'd be legal. Let's play the word game. We won't call it deportation, we'll call it the "RePatriation Act". These people deserve to be repatriated damn it. Anyone who disagrees is a freakin' racist.
He must be responsible for the pothole at the end of our driveway then. I'll have to write him and give him a piece of my mind tomorrow and at the same time tell him to tell Karl to stop kicking up the sand storms here in the desert.
I have a very dear friend that lives on the northern border and he tells me about the problems there. It's not going to go away no matter how much they complain and whine. Like you say compromise is the only answer but some won't be satisfied unless they get 100%.
Exactly.
As you're an apparent expert on the subject...
How do you propose to solve the problem while remaining within the confines of the Constitution, statutory laws, and conservative principles of limited government?
And how are you prepared to deal with the possible consequences of rigorous law enforcement on illegal aliens?
And how do you deal with the morale issue of sending out Federal agents (civilian or military) day after day to round up people they will probably sympathize with?
Put yourself in the President's shoes, and come up with a solution that is feasible, likely, and rational.
Yep. There's a small percentage of the people are wholly invested in this issue on the notion of "all or nothing". They're going to be terminally ticked off, because I know as well as you do, in the end, we're not going to get "all" or "nothing", but something in between.
