ATLANTA - Former president Carter, a Democrat and frequent critic of President Bush, sees eye-to-eye with him on immigration.
Carter on Wednesday called the Republican president's commitment to immigration reform "quite admirable," saying he agrees with Bush's support of a system that would eventually grant citizenship to some illegals.
The Senate is set to vote as early as Thursday on a bill that calls for tougher border security as well as an eventual chance at citizenship for millions of men and women in the country illegally.
The law should secure the nation's borders while "at the same time treating those who are here with respect and giving them some hope for the future," Carter said.
The Senate plan, which closely mirrors Bush's own proposal, faces an uncertain fate in the House, where representatives have passed legislation that would expose all illegal immigrants to felony charges.
Carter spoke at the close of a three-day forum of international human rights workers at The Carter Center in Atlanta. Human rights activists from 22 countries attended the forum.

If Jimmy Carter thinks this is a good plan .. that should scare the heck out of people!
I was talking to a real estate manager from San Diego on the plane today... she told me that fraudulent IDs are plentiful and if you check them out and they come up valid, you get punished.
I am not sure how that works, but if that is the story she has been told, someone is putting it out.

I wouldn't doubt the numbers of 1-2 million...some in prison and others just under different identities.
If what she said is true then that is obviously a policy designed to specifically avoid illegals by not checking.
Any person who violates our border a second time is guilty of a felony.
Any person who traffics in or possesses fraudulent documents is guilty of a felony.
Any person who conspires with another person to violate our borders is guilty of a felony.
Any person who presents a fraudulent document to obtain employment is guilty of a felony.
Any person who presents a fraudulent document to obtain any government benefit is guilty of a felony.
Any person who obtains a DL fraudulently is guilty of a felony., at least in my State.
I'd say that covers about 80% of them.

Did it ever dawn on you that Carter said this because he believes it? He's a total liberal after all, and loves the idea of all those illegal immigrants and their eventual Dem votes coming into his vision of a utopian USA, a politically correct, multicultural country, where Whitey is in the eventual minority. This is typical Carter. What isn't typical is our President adopting a stance towards illegal immigration that Carter would be in total agreement with. That's what is horrifying here. It shows just how far our President has veered into the enemy's camp, philosophically speaking. It's ghastly.
From reading your past comments, you always paint the portrait in terms of political tactics rather than political philosophy. This isn't some cabal by the liberals to make Bush do what he is doing. He is doing what he is doing because he wants to do it. He wants amnesty for illegal immigrants, just as Carter does, but you can't face that reality, so you try to change the terms of the debate. It's the devil (Dems) that made him do it. But it won't work, as any discerning conservative who reads your comments will soon ascertain. You are too easily seen through in your diversionary tactics.
YEs yes and yes...It's a felony to use someone else's Social Security number or to deliberately provide false information to the Social Security Administration ...
But under Bush and the Senate bill, these felons will given amnesty and they will be allowed to collect social security on top of that,
Those whom say we cant make these people felony refuse to realize that a great many already are. and just erasing the law doesn't help society rid itself of dishonesty and the lack of respect for the rule of law.
And speaking of dishonesty , it is intellectually dishonest for people to keep pointing the talking point that we cant deal with large numbers of felons, so the reality is we have to erase these laws because thats the only way to fix with this,bla bla... but this is hog wash,
we dont have to arrest every one who speeds, or who doesn't pay taxes, people know that some laws our adhered to by good faith, that by random checks they will get caught. All we need to do is make an example of a few of the most visible cheaters, and the rest will be running scared to make sure they keep their visa and passports up to date, just like every other person has to do when visiting any other country on this planet!
