ABC News Update on Hastert Story (ABC says believe US not the Justice Dept.)
ABC ^ | Brian Ross

Posted on 05/24/2006 8:10:05 PM PDT by hipaatwo

Brian Ross Reports:

Richard Esposito and Rhonda Schwartz contributed to this report.

Despite a flat denial from the Department of Justice, federal law enforcement sources tonight said ABC News accurately reported that Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert is "in the mix" in the FBI investigation of corruption in Congress.

Speaker Hastert said tonight the story was "absolutely untrue" and has demanded ABC News retract its story.

Law enforcement sources told ABC News that convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff has provided information to the FBI about Hastert and a number of other members of Congress that have broadened the scope of the investigation. Sources would not divulge details of the Abramoff’s information.

"You guys wrote the story very carefully but they are not reading it very carefully," a senior official said.

One focus involves a letter Hastert wrote in 2003 urging the Secretary of the Interior to block an Indian casino that would have competed with tribes represented by Abramoff.

As a member of Congress, he has been known to be a part of the same "group" as those under investigation.

ABCDisney should stop waving their purported list of "known crooks" in the US government and reveal the names. Oh wait, that only holds for Senator McCarthy's waving a list. The media is permitted to smear without being called on it.

The Dems have picked off DeLay, so they have now set their sights on getting rid of Hastert. He is their new designated victim. Expect more phony charges, lies, rumors, innuencos, in the days to come, about Hastert.

Why would they want to get ride of Hastert...he's one of their best people in the House.

You make no sense. One of the Dems' best people? Do you live on planet earth? Or is there something I'm missing here in your comment.

For the most part, during the last six years Hastert has not acted like the Speaker of the House...he's allowed the Democrats to ride rough shod over him way too much. Why would they want to oust him and possibly get a new Speaker that might actually keep them in their place.

Explain yourself. What has Hastert allowed the Dems to get away with? The House, and in particular, Hastert, is all that stands between us and a disastrous Senate immigration bill. What has Hastert done that has let the Dems run rough shod over him, pray tell?

It's only been since his name came up with the Senate immigration bill that some people even knew he was alive. Prior to that no one ever praised him for anything...when anyone even remembered who he was.

The knives are out for Hastert. Immigration reform?

Perhaps a veiled threat in defense of their comrades in arms at the NYTimes

The Republicans are afraid of the media. I turned against the Republicans when I closely followed the John Bolton hearsing. I was shocked at how weak and ineffective they were. Lugar kept getting rolled and that Voinevich (sp) crying. The Republicans will feel much more comfortable as a minority.

GMA did an expose' on the oil industry yesterday.

The usual 'big oil is gouging us' hit piece.

They wrapped it in on the scene reporters on oil rigs, etc. to give it the air of 'in depth and legitimacy'.

They mentioned the billions in profits the oil companies are making but somehow failed to mention the multi-billions the government is making.

If the oil co. is making 10% ( I think that's about right) then they are making about .30/ gal at $3.00/gal.

The average government take is around .48 /gal.
And some States, including mine, North Carolina, set the tax as a % of the price/gal.
Every six months NC reviews the cost of a gallon of gas and adjusts the tax accordingly.

Now WHO is gouging???

"Whether they like it or not, members of Congress, including Hastert, are under investigation," one federal official said tonight.

This is OLD news and there is no mention he is a target

ABC stepped in it

That's not how ABC wrote the story. Aren't they the outrageous liars?

To be frank, there's probably 535 of them "in the mix".

Shocked? After 40 years?

I will not participate in, nor do the bidding of, the MSM/DNC campaign for the defeat of the right.

Brian Ross Reports:

Deputy Attorney General Paul J. McNulty, "With regard to reports suggesting that the Speaker of the House is under investigation or 'in the mix,' as stated by ABC News, I reconfirm, as stated by the Department earlier this evening, that these reports are untrue."

LOL..he adds nothing else after that!
