HILL DRIVE FOR '55' ( National Maximum Speed Limit )
New York Post ^ | May 24, 2006 | IAN BISHOP

Posted on 05/24/2006 3:25:12 PM PDT by george76

- In a surprise move yesterday, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton called for "most of the country" to return to a speed limit of 55 mph in an effort to slash fuel consumption...

"The 55-mile speed limit really does lower gas usage.

And wherever it can be required, and the people will accept it, we ought to do it," Clinton said at the National Press Club.

This might sell in the tree hugging world, but for the vast majority of people who actually have to drive this will go over like a mandatory root canal. Keep talking Hill:).

And we can bet they go a lot faster than 55 when directed to do so by Her Majesty.

I recall a Clinton '96 Campaign worker laughingly recalling for me how they'd take the bus convoy 80+ miles per hour at times. "We'd close off the freeways and drive like a bat outa hell from town to town" is how he put it.

This was all done at the direction of the Secret Service of course.

Not exponential, though, it's a simple speed-squared (drag) or speed-cubed (power required) relationship. So doubling speed will result in 4 times the drag, and 8 times the power required to go that speed. Going 75 mph rather than 60 results in the aerodynamic drag being (75/60)^2 = 56% higher, and 93% more power required to overcome the aerodynamic drag.

"I drive a Chrysler 300m, which has a very low drag coefficient."

For a second there I thought you must be on drugs or something, until I noticed it was a 300M you were talking about, not a 300C. I can't see that big tall grille and hood, and squared off tail on the 300C being very slick aerodynamically. But the 300M had a much smoother shape.

"I recall truckers complaining that their rigs got worse mileage at 55 than 65 because of the gearing."

That doesn't make sense. Trucks have tons of gears, closely spaced. If 55 was too low for top gear they could easily drop down a gear or two and be running the same rpm as at 65.

"I know my Honda Pilot shifts into 'high' at 62 mph.
At 55 I would be stuck in a lower gear and likely burn more fuel."

Weird. The 5 speed automatic in my Accord has switched up to 5th and the torque converter locked up by the time I reach about 45 mph, if just cruising on a level road.

Geez, are Hilliary's handlers on Christmas break? I am surprised there weren't any Dem operatives there to wrestle her to the ground before she damaged herself some more.

RAISE the speed limit in wide open West Texas to 80

Exactly. Why should it be assumed that 70 or 55 is the right speed limit anyway. We should be trying to push speeds higher as technology safely allows. I hope my great grandkids don't have to settle for sub-100MPH travel. Thank goodness we don't have to settle for horse and buggy speed today. I'm not saying make it 100MPH tomorrow, but there should be national leadership on the topic of building cars and roads that can handle faster and faster travel, and do it safer that today.
