RIP Senator Bentsen. You will always have my utmost respect for SMASHING that commie Yarborough in the Texas Democratic Primary, taking him out of the Senate.

The Bensten bird sanctuary in Mission is a wonderful tribute to this man.

The problem with that, of course, would have been that Quayle was trying to compare himself favorably to JFK. To be honest, JFK had some good points (for a Democrat), but then so did Truman and FDR. Too bad they don't make 'em like that anymore.

I didn't always agree with Bentsen, but he was a much better human being than the current crop of socialists.

Then why did he run around with a useless imp like Dukakis? I remember him during the 1988 election - he had mastered all the anti-Reagan, anti-GOP talking points about the economy, social issues, etc. He parroted them consistently.

Lets not make this guy a saint. If he was still in politics today, he would probably be just like most of the rest.

Exactly, in many ways Bentsen was more conservative than most Republicans in that era. The liberals in Texas never forgave Bentsen for that.

Same reason why Lieberman sold his soul to run with Gore. He sensed it was his only chance.

He isn't a saint. Lieberman is as shallow as Bentsen was. I hope the dems in CT run him out of town in the CT primary.

I don't see anyone here portraying him as a saint. He was a faithful servant of the country, who we sometimes disagreed with.

I know, my post said that he wasn't a saint, and if he were active today would more likely than not be like his compatriots in the dem party.

"The problem with that, of course, would have been that Quayle was trying to compare himself favorably to JFK."

Right, and I always thought that was a tactical error. The Dims take no prisoners, so no quarter should be given to ANY of their manufactured luminaries.

Yeah Quayle screwed up, but what can you expect from a man who committed the absolutely unpardonable sin of mispelling "potato".

If he'd been in congress today...he'd be just like the rest of the demwits.

He's lived a long full life....with wealth most of us can only dream of.

Prayers for his family. He was 85yrs old at death.

Well, come on - even a broken clock is right twice a day - JFK on tax cuts or FDR on WWII? I don;t like their socialism as much as the next FReeper, but I would trust a Dem like Truman over any of their current crop to continue the war on terrorism.

How long did it take Bentsen to leave the Clinton White House...I ALWAYS thought it was strange that he left so quickly and nobody ever thought to find out exactly why.

I'm glad someone here gets it.

I'm from CT, and I have a hard time reading some of the Lieberman-love-fest threads on FR.

As Secretary of the Treasury, Bentsen helped to shepherd Clinton's first budget through Congress.

Then he resigned rathher abruptly. Bentsen was no saint, but I think that after he got a whiff of the stink of the real clinton regime, he got his hat and left.

Not so much an unpardonable sin as just pretty damn dumb.
