HOUSTON (AP) Lloyd Bentsen, a courtly Texan who represented the state in Congress for 28 years and served as President Clintons first treasury secretary, died Tuesday morning, his family said. He was 85.
Bentsen, also the Democratic 1988 vice presidential nominee, died at his home in Houston.
His distinguished political career took him from the humble beginnings of a county office in the Rio Grande Valley in the 1940s to six years in the U.S. House, 22 in the U.S. Senate and two in the Clinton Cabinet, where he was instrumental in directing the administrations economic policy.
How sad.
Utterer of the famous cheap shot at Dan Quayle?
Wow, I thought he was older than 85 back in 1988.
That would be the one...
I know life Mr. Bentsen. Life is a good friend of mine. Mr. Bensen, your not alive.
He will forever be remembered for his cheap-shot attack on Dan Quayle.
As far as I'm concerned he can rot in hell.
RIP - it's a shame Lloyd got mixed up with the liberal rats toward the end.
Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy, I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy.
--Lloyd Bentsen
Oh please, I was not necessarily a fan of Bentsen, but it was a classic line, Quayle was a big boy, he could take it.
Bentsen was a Democrat before the party sold out its soul, and when they were the loyal opposition, instead of what they are today.
Actually I would have considered that commment more of a compliment.
I think that he left a line off the jibe at Qayle: "You're no Jack Kennedy. You're better than he was."
Still, prayers for the family.
...LOL
You're thinking of Warren Christopher.
Lloyd Bentsen, cheap shot artist, RIP.
I feel the same way especially for selling us out with NAFTA, GATT.......typical politician, every time he opened his mouth telling us how wonderful these free trade deals would be, he was lying through his teeth.
Lloyd Bensen ping...
