Tom Tancredo warns America itself 'in mortal danger'

Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo.

WASHINGTON – Two years ago, he was as lonely as the Maytag repairman – an obscure congressman trying desperately to raise the visibility of an issue he believed threatened the very security of the U.S.

More recently, he has become a force to be reckoned with, the leader of a powerful House caucus, a Republican who has taken on the president, a man respected for outspoken positions and the political force behind what has become the hottest issue in the nation.

Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., chairman of the House Immigration Reform Caucus and the undisputed heavyweight champion of the border security issue in the nation's capital, now tells the whole story of the threats facing the nation, the solutions within its grasp and his own personal quest to awaken the political establishment to the seething discontentment gripping America as a result of illegal immigration.

In his new book, "In Mortal Danger," published by WND Books, Tancredo warns that the country is on a course to the dustbin of history. Like the great and mighty empires of the past, he writes, superpowers that once stretched from horizon to horizon, America is heading down the road to ruin.

English historian Edward Gibbon, in penning his classic "The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" (ironically published in the year America's Founding Fathers declared independence from Great Britain), theorized that Rome fell because it rotted from within. It succumbed to barbarian invasions because of a loss of civic virtue, its citizens became lazy and soft, hiring barbarian mercenaries to defend the empire because they were unwilling to defend it themselves.

Tancredo says America is following in the tragic footsteps of Rome.

Living up to his reputation for candor, Tancredo explains how the economic success and historical military prowess of the United States has transformed a nation founded on Judeo-Christian principles of right and wrong into an overindulgent, self-deprecating, immoral cesspool of depravity.

His recipe for turning things around?

Without strong, moral leadership, without a renewed sense of purpose, without a rededication to family and community, without shunning the race hustlers and pop-culture sham artists, without protecting borders, language and culture, the nation that once was "the land of the free and home of the brave" and the "one last best hope of mankind" will repeat the catastrophic mistakes of the past, he writes.

Tancredo, born and raised in Colorado, represents Colorado's 6th district in the U.S. House of Representatives. Prior to his election to Congress in 1998, Tancredo worked as a schoolteacher, was elected to the Colorado State House of Representatives in 1976, was appointed by President Reagan as the secretary of education's regional representative in 1981, and served as president of the Independence Institute. He serves on the International Relations Committee, the Resources Committee and the Budget Committee, and is the chairman of the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus. Tancredo and his wife, Jackie, reside in Littleton, Colo.

Many of these are evanglicals and Pentecostal. I hate to say it because they have left their historic faith but true. Hispanics are the fastest growing segment of the Pentecostal and evnaglical church. So yes. I would feel the same

Until they have to return home before applying for citizenship and return here WITH permission to do so, any "plea deal" will be seen as amnesty.

Call it whatever you want to the bottom line is that it is unacceptable to grant them citizenship or the path to it that does not involve going home. That is what the vast majority wants. We will gain it too , you will see.

The path to citizenship is already outlined. In its most basic terms they have to get permission first. They have to ASK not demand. They have to wait not jump the fence.

Plea deal denied!

Bill Bennett is not my hero.

So you say, yet I have seen you defend him and agree with his assesments of American society. By the way, I agree with some of them too. However, now I seem to see your posts on the I Love Rudy threads. Hopefully you won't stay on that bandwagon long either.

Ues we have, to the tune of the fourth largest illegal population in the country.

The term "border state" does not even cut it when talking about this problem any longer.

I think some Republicans/conservatives need to smart upon Tancredo. He doesnt care about this party and at times I am not sure how much he cares really about immigration.

This is your fancy way of saying that he puts conservative principles before his party when it comes down to it. What's wrong with that?

Tancredo, came to attention largely through his leadership through Colorado term limits(Remember when that was the subject that would save the Republic). He got in took all these pledges to keep his term limits pledge and then proceeded to break it. Why? Especially since keeping his term limit pledge was a matter was an "overriding issue"

He made that pledge to the people of his own district. Apparently they didn't care that he ran again because they re-elected him. And they will again.

Well according to Tom because there are higher callings and gosh darn it he couldnt leave till he solved this immigration problem. Bawhahahahahaha. Congressman Tancredo how many years does until that Congressional pension vest.

Again, his actual constituents don't seem to mind very much because they elected. him. On the immigration he IS one of the leaders. He is the founder and chairman of the House Immigration Reform Caucus which enjoys membership of one third of the Republicans in Congress. Those Republicans are some of the most conservative members of Congress and make up two thirds of the 38 congressmen who earned 100% "Best and Brightest" ratings from the American Conservative Union. If he was not a leader on this issue, no one would join his caucus. No one would stay there. The most conservative Republicans in Congress seem to follow his lead on immigration issues. What's your problem?

Tancredo has thrown his hat in with alot of people that have certain agendas behind the scene as to population control and the like. Tancredo is the crazy aunt in the attic that gives Tom Delay ,and the President, and many of us fits.

Is that your way of saying that he's a one issue congressman? Check the conservative ratings I've posted. Not one of the organizations are immigration reform groups. He's earned HIGH ratings from a broad spectrum of conservative groups. What more can you ask for as a conservative than his excellent conservative voting record and leadership? You have to admit that his voting record, as a conservative, is respectable. Right?

A shameless attention headline grabber that whats he is. I saw that on his comments and actions regarding Louisiana. I dont have alot of time for a guy that is spending time creating hell for his Republican Colleagues campaigns or his over the top rhetoric thats getting us nowhere.

His over the top "rhetoric", as you smear it, is called leadership on the important issue of immigration reform and border security. So important is this issue that the President of the United States, just one week ago, gave an unprecedented oval office speech to the nation about it. ALL other speeches he's made from the oval office were about the War on Terror. This issue has become that important. You can than Tom Tancredo, for one, for calling the President's attention to the issue. That's leadership not grandstanding or headline grabbing. And he doesn't give his RINO colleagues hell. He just tells the truth and they think it is hell.

It seems that its one position and that this immigration issue.

There it is again. Check out his 100% and 90+% ratings from a broad spectrum of conservative groups. If he was all about one issue, he would not earn those ratings based upon his overall voting record. You will find it difficult to find another Republican in Congress with that same high ratings as Tom Tancredo.

Well some FReepers might not like Tom Tancredo but I do.

Sometimes the truth hurts and the Open Borders,Hate America First crowd and their enablers the ACLU just do not appreciate opposing views.

I would rather have Tancredo for president than that Loony Tunes John McCaniac.

Of course he was reelected. Most people reelect their own Congressmen all the time. Thern limit folks knew that but still said that term limits were needed. I am against term limits I think they are ridiculous. But I didn't come to political power largely as a result of that issue either including being a leader in Colorado term limits.
