IMHO, 1911 could be significantly improved by redesigning of one feature - by giving it much more seriously slanted grip (like 125 degrees in Luger or even 130-135 - whatever the maximum slant at which the magazine would still feed reliably). Then the pistol would be pointing naturally.

I've got a .460 Rowland Revolver from Dan Wesson.
It shoots .45 ACP/.45 Auto Rim/.45 Super/.460 Rowland and .45 WinMag.
I enjoy shooting the almost 3 pound revolver with moon clips. To my recollection the .460 Rowland and the .45 Super were about the same in power.
So, I standardized on shooting the .45 ACP and the 300 grain .45 WinMag which is essentially kicks like a 44 Magnum.

...grand old 1911 is still king...and is certainly the "automatic" by which all others are judged...Hey, that's the whole article for me.
Seeing that makes it unnecessary for me to read any further.
Who is this Taffin fellow, with his wealth of wisdom?

I dunno...the sight of my slide being jettisoned...at what would seem like a supersonic speed....kinda freaks me out....especially those standing behind me at the range...

The muzzle velocity/energy for the .460 Rowland is reputed to be significantly above the .45 Super. The Rowland looks like a reincarnation of the old .451 Detonics magnum. I would prefer to see a ramped barrel for this conversion, no matter how thick the brass is claimed to be.

Interesting observation. It seems that almost all the feeding/reliability problems of the 1911A1 can be traced to the nature of the round stacking in the magazine with the extractor groove of each round sitting just on top of the groove of the round below it. It is what gives rise to the "angular gap" between rounds 5 and 6 and of the "nose dive" common to the first 2 rounds (of the 7 round mag) as they exit the magazine on their way into the chamber. I wonder why Browning designed it with this grip to axis-of-bore angle?

Hey, no fair. I can only conceal 8 guns on my body at any given time.

"However with all the new technology the grand old 1911 is still king, is still the number one platform for custom 'smiths, and is certainly the "automatic" by which all others are judged"
LOL.
There's a reason why there are som many 'smiths' supporting the M1911, and it ain't because of "custom" needs. Even the higher-end 1911s are coming out of the factory needing 'tuning' to get them right.
When they run 35k, 40k, or 50k in competitive trials, they're not even thinking about 1911s.

I'll be interested in seeing what kind of draw the gun porn gets these days. It may be my imagination, but it seems many of the veterans and warrior types have gone silent since certain FReepers where shown the door.
