As FoxNews reports today, New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin has "narrowly" won re-election to his mayoral office today. This, despite his complete incompetence in both preparing for Hurricane Katrina and in the now-infamous aftermath. (Surely you haven't forgotten the details, like the fleet of school buses sitting useless in standing water.) And then there was his famously racist comment about New Orleans needing to remain "a chocolate city." (As other writers have noted, can anyone seriously contemplate a white guy running for reelection appealing to voters to keep a city "vanilla"?)
What Nagin's reelection ensures, is that New Orleans will remain a predominantly poor and dismally unprepared city.
The only thing Nagin managed to do (and he had LOTS of help here) was to blame the whole thing on the federal government. So when the next big one hits, and New Orleans is devastated once again, it won't be his fault then, either.
Nagin's a joke, but it's the New Orleans voters who are pathetic.

Hey, I was pulling for Nagin. Truly, because isn't it time for Americans to say NO to political family dynasty's.
He won because grass roots white conservatives put him over the top. We did it because he believes in transparent government. We put philosophy ahead of prejudice. Unlike in a Landrieu/Morial criminal enterprise, conservatives will have a seat at Nagin's table. Further the aid money will go to the people who need it and won't be divied up the Louisiana political machine.
Before you look to confirm your biases by reading nonsense, try learning the facts.

The city will flood again this year, the irony, Karma and joo-joo are just to intense to let New Orleans miss another flood. I'm predicting the levees will break again and we'll have the same Road Runner and Wyle E Coyote routine again...

I am thoroughly amazed at an interview that I just heard with New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin on WWL radio. He said that he was considering a mandatory evacuation of the city. Considering? With the official National Hurricane Ceneter track showing a Category Four hurricane, perhaps even a Category FIVE hurricane moving directly over a city that takes 72 hours to evacuate? He said that the city’s attorneys were in consultation about the legalities of such an order. Legalities? Wouldn’t that be something you would contemplate in advance? Not 48 hours before landfall. What would be the criteria that would make such an action automatic?
Mayor Nagin said that the Governor had recommended that he talk to Max Mayfield at the National Hurricane Center. Hello! I would have had a hotline installed directly to Max’s cell phone. The Mayor said that Max Mayfield told him this was the storm that everyone has feared for New Orleans for many, many years. Max said that he had been in the business for 31 years and that this was the real deal. Still tonight, traffic on evacuation routes in Southeast Lousiana was amazingly light. Will tomorrow morning’s evacuation order come too late?
All I have heard from local emergency managers in Southeast Louisiana is the looming disaster that is New Orleans and a powerful hurricane. I have had heard that emergency managers say they will need thousands of body bags when a major hurricane pushes a 20-25 foot storm surge into Lake Ponchartrain and over the city’s levee system. Hopefully that will not come true.
I have another fear. That people on the Mississippi and Alabama coasts will take Katrina lightly because of all the media coverage and focus on New Orleans. A storm surge of 15-20 feet or higher will occur in that vulnerable area of the Mississippi coast around Waveland, Pass Christian and Bay St. Louis. Those names sound familiar? They were made famous by Hurricane Camille’s 27 foot storm surge in 1969.

I can see taht between Nagin and Landrieu, there wasn't much of a choice, but to think that Nagin is a friend of conservatives and believes in "transparent government" instead of being just another crook, is total delusion.
Can't imagine how conservatives got conned into this, if in fact it's true.
I didn't think there were any conservatives in NOLA.

Voters in New Orleans have to decide between the better of evils. It's as if the only choices are someone from the Jimmy Hoffa's associates or the Carlo Gambino's family.
They'll want that "Choclate City" only until the ants show up.
I am a conservative in New Orleans. So there's one. Rob Couhig got 12,000 votes in the primary so there are a few more. So you are wrong about that just as you are wrong about Nagin.
Your lack of understanding about the situation coupled with your poor critical thinking skills is probably too great of obstacle for me to overcome in explaining my vote to you. So I won't.

I am relieved that Landrieu was defeated. This Louisianian thanks you for your efforts.
The "voters" of New Orleans will deserve the chaos, corruption, and personal ruin that await them in the not-to-distant future at the hands of their illiterate murderer of the English language.........
I was cringing a little bit during Nagin's acceptance speech. When he thanked President Bush, the room which was about 75% black, went nuts. Cheering and applauding. When he mentioned Blank-o, they hissed.
I loved it.
The only reason Landrieu got in the mayor's race in the first place was to make sure that no Republican made it into the runoff. Then with Nagin and Landrieu going for the honors, it became incompetence v insider. Nice situation for Dims. Even Howard Dean couldn't make up his mind, but was likely pressured by Landrieu-sister-in-Senate to support brother-lieutenant-governor.
NO voters are stupid on several levels......the Nagin reelection is only one.

How did the race come between 2 Democrats? Why was there a primary with other Democrats if Nagin is the incumbant?
Let's see if the good mayor goes down with the ship vs comforting in Dallas.
