National Maritime Day, 2006

"I call upon all the people of the United States to mark this observance by honoring the service of merchant mariners and by displaying the flag of the United States at their homes and in their communities. I also request that all ships sailing under the American flag dress ship on that day."

To the Merchant Seamen of the United States!

They went to sea with little to no armaments carrying in some cases massive amounts of explosives to our troops. These were brave men and deserve their day. They are the forgotten.

What a joke. Hardly anyone even knows what the hell the Merchant Marine is. They put out this BS speech while millions of containers pour in on foriegn flagged vessels. This is an insult.

Did anyone mention the US merchant marine is nearly extinct?

How many US flagged ships?

There are ZERO in international trade.

ZERO cruise ships are US flagged.

The only thing the United States Merchan Marine Union controls is a few "several hundred million" dollars in a pension fund.

PS - Sorry, didn't mean to offend. It's just I worked in the USMM for years and the industry is VERY troubled; aside from gov subsidy and domestic stuff. And even that's not that great. The B/S words from el pres cost nothing and solve nothing in that industry. I think the USMM was one of the first jobs that "Americans just won't do". Anyways, sorry again for offending.
