PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: President and Mrs. Bush attended St. John's this morning, and GWB went for a mountain bike ride. The first couple also made a brief television appearance to congratulate the new Iraqi government. Here are the President's brief remarks:
THE PRESIDENT: The formation of a unity government in Iraq is a new day for the millions of Iraqis who want to live in freedom. And the formation of the unity government in Iraq begins a new chapter in our relationship with Iraq.This morning, I called the President, the Prime Minister and the Speaker to congratulate them on working together to form the unity government. I assured them that the United States will continue to assist the Iraqis in the formation of a free country, because I fully understand that a free Iraq will be an important ally in the war on terror, will serve as a devastating defeat for the terrorists and al Qaeda, and will serve as an example for others in the region who desire to be free.

Hehe. In the first photo of former Pres. Bush, he looks like he's holding a light saber; shades of Star Wars.
Has it been updated since then? I know Southack has been keeping it current, and there have been a number of things (like permanent tax cuts, and Alito), since that list was posted.
I just watched a news conference by the lead surgeon and the trainer of Barbaro. The horse is out of surgery, out of recovery and doing as well as could be hoped for. He is eating some hay and standing on his injured leg, which the vet said is in a cast from the hock all the way down and around his hoof. They will change the case in a week to 10 days, depending on their daily evaluations.
The vet said that the horse is probably going to be at the New Bolton hospital for several weeks, probably longer, and that it's still a "coin toss" as to whether or not he will recover. But right now in the immediate aftermath of surgery, things look much more hopeful than they did yesterday. Barbaro's trainer, Michael Matz, said he is much more encouraged because he saw the horse walk into his stall from the recovery area and begin to eat hay.
Both men seemed to be in very upbeat moods, which sure made me feel better. :)
Thanks for that update, Wolfstar (and for tonight's Dose). Indeed a bit more optimistic than yesterday.

Mexico has a presidential election on July 2. The leading candidates are Felipe Calderon, a conservative, and Andres Lopez Obrador, a leftist who has the backing of Venezuelan thug Hugo Chavez and Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.
What does this have to do with President Bush's plan for comprehensive immigration reform? Maybe lots.

PRESIDENT BUSH AND REPUBLICANS are staring political disaster in the face on immigration. The problem isn't that they might enact a bill allowing illegal immigrants living in America to earn their way to citizenship, inviting foreign workers to come here, and beefing up security on the 2,000-mile border with Mexico. No, it would be a disaster for Republicans if they didn't pass such a bill.
Rarely has the American public been so involved in a national issue as they are today in immigration reform. Everybody has an opinion. Everybody agrees there's a crisis when, as is the case today, hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants are streaming across our southern border and millions more are already living in this country. The public expects action from the people who run Washington--that's Bush and Republicans. But action is not what they will get if the enforcement-only House refuses to compromise. What they will get in that case is an impasse. And that means the crisis endures.
The American people are not on the side of the House Republicans who favor toughened enforcement and nothing more. On the contrary, a national consensus has formed around what the president calls "comprehensive" immigration reform--that is, impenetrable border security plus earned citizenship and a temporary worker program.

Overall, EXCELLENT NEWS . . . trendlines UP! [Interestingly, BOTH the CBS and Fox polls showed substantial majorities supporting the President's approach to toward immigration and the NSA/CIA . . . Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm!]
COUPLE THESE RESULTS WITH THE FACT THAT KARL ROVE EARLIER IN THE WEEK VERIFIED WHAT WE ALREADY KNEW -- the public LIKES this President.
. . . Despite low approval ratings, "I'm sanguine," Rove said. "I KNOW OUR OWN POLLS."
He said that Bush's likeability, his personal approval ratings, were in the 60s in some polls. "Job approval is lower. And what that says to me is that people like him, they respect him, he's somebody they feel a connection with, but they're just sour right now on the war. And that's the way it's going to be."

I found it interesting that Nagin made a positive comment about President Bush in his 'victory' speech . . . From Captain's Quarters:
Fittingly for a community searching for its identity and unity, the campaign lacked the normal vitriol of elections these days. While both candidates criticized each other's policies and track record, neither made it personal, and both emphasized the finer qualities of their opponents. The tone was somewhat reminiscent of national politics in the first weeks after 9/11 that disappeared forever after the invasion of Afghanistan. In some ways, it should set an example for general elections everywhere. Nagin capped it off by thanking George Bush in his acceptance speech for all of the assistance he has given New Orleans after noting that the two of them have become "the most vilified politicians in the country".
