Montenegro has voted for independence from its union with Serbia, according to unofficial projections. If confirmed, the vote would erase the last vestige of the former Yugoslavia.
Initial indications are that 56.3% of voters elected to secede from Serbia. The pro-independence bloc needs to win 55% of the vote to succeed.
The question of independence has deeply divided Montenegro, with its opponents arguing that it will damage economic, family and political ties with Serbia.
Montenegro has been independent during most of its history anyhow. It would be nice if they restored the Montenegrin Crown, but I doubt that will happen.
The 'Green' Montenegrins finally won (the 'Greens' were against union with Serbia following WW I). A 100 years passes and we're back to the way things were in 1914 (partly at least).
Kosovo is only in question to those who have chosen to stick their heads in the sand - it's all over except for the crying, regardless of what happens in Montenegro.
If the Ethnic Mexicans ever achieve the level of success of the Ethnic Albanians, all of North America is doomed.
Well it's also a question for those of us who haven't been paying attention to the news from that region. I think your comments indicate that Kosovo will be breaking away from Serbia, or that they have already done so. Am I reading you correctly?
Point taken.
Kosovo has already been broken away from Serbia - when NATO displaced Serbian forces in June of '99. Ever since then, the K-Albanians and the international community have been working towards making Kosovo's de facto independence from Belgrade de jure.
Kosovo has been off my radar screen for many years. But I know some people who are deploying there soon, and that makes me more interested in getting caught up with the news.
And just for general purpose given the topic of this thread, here is CEMI's (Montenegro's Center for Monitoring) Referendum Page, in English, no less.
Congrats to Montenegro.
= )
We have property in Montenegro and all I know is the government is hindering us from selling it. It's been very frustrating.
If they're all roosting at home count away!
"Predictable, really. The final consequences to the vicious policies that Milosevic began in 1989, may he burn in hell."
Yeah, but also due to Djukanovic's greed. He basically wants a country of his own-not because he cares about Montenegrin freedom or self-determination- but so he can pursue his own "business" arrangements. Milosevic's policies helped him out in a big way. The only thing Milo Djukanovic cares about is Milo Djukanovic, and he probably thanked God that Milosevic was around so he could increase support for independence.
BTW, Montenegro has only a little over *600,000* people. Can a modern independent country survive with so small a population? Especially since Montenegrins in the northern and eastern parts are considerings seceding from Montenegro and joining Serbia if independence succeeds.
This is not an immigration thread. Stop trying to be a thread hijacker.
It certainly seems so.
Cyprus, Bahrain, Luxembourg, Malta, Bahama, Iceland, Belize, Barbados, Andorra, Liechtenstein, and Monaco are some examples.
This is actually great news for Serbia.
Your concern is appreciated.
