This entire article is spin. Lieberman won with a 30% margin. And he's beaten? Puh-leeze. I'm not a Lieberman fan, but it sounds like the writer is a Republican liberal (of the Christine Whitman persuasion) prematurely cheering on Lieberman's political demise.

That 85% figure should be considered derived in the context of having to vote in a way to follow the Dem party line. Certainly some of those votes could be considered "throw aways" to achieve other objectives. The only thing Joe has in common these days with the Dems is a pro labor bent which in certain cases is given short shrift by the Repubs.

This is another example of the Bolshecrats devouring the moderate Democrats. I don't understand why the moderates don't recognize this and continue
solidarity with the Demoviks. The moderates would be better off switching parties than to be picked off by the looney left. In the primaries the loonies start off with 50%. The Dummycrats need only pick up 10% of the middle to win in the general election. A good Republican should be able to knock off a Despicable candidate.

I agree. It's tempting to say "Poor old Joe," but this guy abandoned all pro-life principles when he ran as Gore's veep in 2000, and he would never vote with the Republicans to break a filibuster. Good riddance. I would MUCH prefer that BOTH parties became "purer" and made the choices clearer. Let's have REAL debates about these issues, so that people can see where legislation will end up in 10 years.

Lieberman is against Islamofascism and supports Israel's right to exist. This makes him unacceptable to many Democrats.

I suspect you're right. But it is possible their candidate is so whacked out that they may experience the oft threatened election boycott the Republicans are planning to show the President they are upset.

In that case, the party that registers the most dead voters will win.

I agree with the sentiment but if Lieberman ever switched parties it would be a coup for Republicans and a nail in the coffin for Democrats. Their nominee for Vice President in 2000 switched parties because of what his party believes is his too tough stance on National Security????

Joe may be many things not conducive to the Republican party but he is tough on Defense.

I say the Republicans should trade away Lincoln Chafee in return for Lieberman. The Republicans would lose nothing and the democrats would ooze embarrassment for years to come.

No, the perception given by the article is accurate. For a sitting senator, these nominations are a formality. Party officials are the LAST people to throw an incumbent overboard, because they have the most to gain from propping up the machine and the most to lose from pissing off an incumbent who looks to stay on. Lamont wasn't supposed to get his 15%. The Lieberman machine in the big cities had to twist a lot of arms to get this result.

I'm wondering the same thing. I'd be willing to trade Lieberman for a Republican, even a RINO, so long as he votes with the Republicans to break filibusters. On the other hand, I'd hate to trade Lieberman for another far left wing Democrat.
