Boston College grads to rise in protest of Condi
Boston Herald ^ | 05/21/06 | Marie Szaniszlo

More than 200 faculty members have signed a letter of opposition to her. Scores of students plan to protest. And dozens of other demonstrators are expected to attend.

All of this and more await Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice at Boston College tomorrow, when she is due to receive an honorary doctor of laws degree and give what is shaping up to be this year’s most controversial commencement address.

But anyone expecting Rice to be shouted down may be disappointed.

“I think people have a right to demonstrate as long as they do it in a respectful way,” said senior Amanda Sindel-Keswick, 22.

Students who plan to stand in protest during Rice’s speech plan to sit together so as not to block other people’s views, according to the college’s newspaper. And those who don’t want to draw attention to themselves by standing plan to wear armbands reading “No honorary degree” or “Not in my name.”

“I don’t agree with what she’s done with her power,” said senior Suzanne Dupre, 21. “I just wouldn’t want to see anything happen that would dampen the day.”

Not everyone is upset to have the world’s most powerful woman speaking at their school.

“Whether you agree with her political decisions or not, you have to recognize this is a coup for BC, bringing in someone this high-profile,” said senior Roger Nani, 21. “This is a good PR move.”

It must be wonderful to be 21 and know absolutely everything.

How would the reaction be if she were Secy. of State to a President Kerry? (Not that Lurch would be smart enough to appoint someone like her...)

Liberals keep proving to everyone how little class they have. Keep it up - replay the events with McCain and now with Condi over and over. Thank God conservatives don't behave in such a childish and immature manner at graduations.

If the speaker were Al Franken, would the conservative professors and students at B.C. (I know, I know; not too many in number if at all) act this way?

What, only 200? Pff, I figured' the entire college would oppose her! Must be an ultra right-wing college if all they can get is about 200 protestors. Any decent East Coast college worthy of the title "Liberal Stronghold" would turn out with torches and pitchforks.

What I don't get is why would Condi even bother going? Did they send out the invite to her on April 1st?

If these KIDS at this school knew anything about this woman, they would be looking up to her. Their actions just prove that they are being taught the wrong message.

Because she has class and courage. Two items lacking in liberals

letters to the Boston Globe, pro and Con, about the prof quitting BC:

AN OPEN response to Steve Almond (''Condoleezza Rice at Boston College? I quit," op-ed, May 12):

I would like to thank you for your recent resignation as an adjunct professor at BC. I am sure that many alumni, like myself, appreciate your decision because we can once again confidently contribute to the school's development funds. It sickened me to think that my hard-earned dollars were being used to support professors with such ignorant beliefs. If you have such an issue with liars, it is a wonder you didn't resign when Michael Moore spoke. This recent scene at Boston College, and the nationwide negative publicity, embarrasses me. I hope that you can inspire the hundreds of professors at my alma mater who share your opinions and may follow your lead and resign. As a former student of yours, I thank you for urging me to ''exercise my First Amendment rights" to write this farewell e-mail to you.

DANA PANZARINO
Valley Stream, N.Y.

BLESS YOU, Steve Almond.

We have never experienced such a significant and powerful example of what it means to put your money where your mouth is. The only downside is the loss of such leadership at Boston College.

Now it would be further edifying if some BC donors put their mouths where their money is.

________________________________________________
I THOUGHT commencement was a time to celebrate the students who have completed college as they embark on their journey through adulthood. It is laudable to voice your opinion about the commencement speaker selection. It is your right to stamp your foot and quit if things don't go your way. And, although it reeks of grandstanding, it is OK for you to cc: the Globe on your letter of resignation.

But when you encourage students to ''exercise their own First Amendment rights" at Rice's speech, presumably by boycotting or protesting or disrupting the ceremony, you prioritize mean political agendas over the students' celebration. Commencement is their day, not yours, and if you care so little about them that you'll tarnish their day with politics, then perhaps the college is better off without you.

I DEEPLY admire Steve Almond's op-ed and his action in resigning his teaching post at BC. As a professor of English myself at Curry College, I know how difficult it is to find teaching appointments. His is no symbolic flourish but an act of real courage. Thank goodness we have such brave souls to remind us how we should respond when we are betrayed.

I guess that explains why these KIDS feel this way, they listen to someone that is blind to the truth.

Racists.

Anti American liberal kooks is more like it. If they brought in a black speaker spewing "america stinks" rhetoric, there would be no problem.
