My favorite was Seattle Slew...

I was a little kid when he ran, and being from Washington State, a little south of Seattle, I felt like he was practically my horse :~D

He died on derby day, 2002 at the age of 28.

Slew was a great, great horse. One of my favorites also. Funny how Secretariat, Seattle Slew and Affirmed all arrived on the scene within five years of each other.

Sigh. Yes, eventually all the records fall, but that's OK. Both Man O'War and Secretariat will be remembered as long as there is horse racing.

Yup. Man O' War is my favorite horse to read about. Books keep coming out about him. The latest I THINK comes out in June. Apparently Luis Fuestel (spelling?) had some notes that he had written about the horse's workouts and was just found or something like that, and after doing the math, it was found out that there were a few times that Man O' War actually ran almost or around 45 mph in some sprints.

"Fugue for Tinhorns" is my favorite scene from Guys and Dolls. Stubby Kaye was great in that number.

I think she was more than a great filly. She either tied or broke records in ALL of her races. I think she would have beaten nearly all colts, and I think she would have given Secretariat a run for his money too. It's too bad she didn't get the chance to run more.

I was at the track when Secretariat won the Belmont. It was hard to see from trackside and I, for one, thought that either there had been a gate mishap or a pile-up on the backstretch. Secretariat came around the turn and there weren't any other horses behind him! They showed up eventually.

Tragic end against Foolish Pleasure. She had more heart than most colts, no question.

Yes, Secretariat was a great horse, I remember so well, especially the Belmont.

Thanks for mentioning Sham, second fastest Derby ever, with Latiffe Pincay riding. Not many people know that.

Do you remember Cañonero II, who held on to his Preakness record? That Triple Crown was wild.
