Barbaro had been training in Fair Hill, MD. That's down the road from us. In fact Hubby and I will eating at Fair Hill Inn tonight - hopefully is celebration of another victory!
I just learned that I can't get the race on my Direct Tv programming. Is it going to be broadcast over the internet?
Hair, good job on the thread!
Barbaro FTW!
Don't forget Secretariat's Preakness run, which many think was also the fastest ever, but failure of the electronic timing left him with a slower hand timed mark. I agree, best horse ever!
Ron Turcotte never touched Secretariat with the whip in any of the three Triple Crown races. Big Red set records in all three, although he was denied the offical Preakness record due to a timer malfunction. In the Belmont, Ron never asked Red to run until about an eighth of a mile from the finish. He never even uncrossed his reins. (Jockeys usually take a cross hold on the reins in the early part of most races and uncross them when they are ready to ask a horse to run.) Ron saw the timer and realized they could get a world record, so he only moved the reins a bit. Red did it all on his own.
Don't get me wrong. Although it isn't uncommon for a jockey not to use the whip when a horse is winning by a comfortable margin, I don't mean to take anything away from Barbaro. As I said, he does have the look of a great horse about him. I'm only describing why and how the 1973 Derby -- so far anyway -- is the greatest one ever.
On the 25th anniversary of Red's Triple Crown, I organized a tribute to him at Hollywood Park. I invited Lucien Laurin, Red's trainer, and Ron. Although Ron couldn't come, we corresponded. Lucien did come and I must tell you meeting him and talking with him about Red was one of the highligts of my life.
No doubt in my mind, that's for sure. Barbaro has been very impressive in his races so far, but as you say, a lot can happen.
You're welcome. :)
To answer my own question: I can't find any webcast advertised of the Preakness. AAaaargh!
Yep, the Daily Racing Form timer caught him in record time, but the track's official timer malfunctioned. The track had to go by what it's official timer showed, though. To this day the DRF chart for the 1973 Preakness shows the record time in addition to the track time.
I think if Secretariat could have been chosen King that year, we'd have had our first monarch, he was so loved. :)
I just read that his heart weighed 3 times as much as other horses' hearts. Not surprising.
I got the horse right here
The name is Paul Revere
And here's a guy that says that the weather's clear
Can do, can do, this guy says the horse can do
If he says the horse can do, can do, can do.
Can do - can do - this guy says the horse can do
If he says the horse can do - can do, can do.
For Paul Revere I'll bite
I hear his foot's all right
Of course it all depends if it rained last night
Likes mud, likes mud, this X means the horse likes mud
If that means the horse likes mud, likes mud
Likes mud.
I tell you Paul Revere
Now this is no bum steer
It's from a handicapper that's real sincere
Can do, can do, this guy says the horse can do.
If he says the horse can do - can do - can do.
Paul Revere. I got the horse right here.
BENNY
I'm pickin' Valentine, 'cause on the morning line
A guy has got him figured at five to nine
Has chance, has chance, this guy says the horse has chance
if he says the horse has chance, has chance, has chance
I know it's Valentine, the morning work looks fine
Besides the jockey's brother's a friend of mine
Needs race, needs race, this guy says the horse needs race
If he says the horse needs race, needs race, needs race.
I go for Valentine, 'Cause on the morning line,
The guy has got him figured at five to nine
Has chance, has chance, this guy says the horse has chance
Valentine! I got the horse right here.
RUSTY CHARLIE
But look at Epitaph. he wins it by a half
According to this here in the Telegraph
"Big Threat" - "Big Threat"
This guy calls the horse "Big Threat"
If he calls the horse "Big Threat",
Big Threat, Big Threat.
And just a minute, boys.
I've got the feed box noise
It says the great-grandfather was Equipoise
Shows class, shows class.
This guy says the horse shows class
If he says the horse shows class
Shows class, show's class.
So make it Epitaph, he wins it by a half
According to this here in the Telegraph.
Epitaph! I got the hore right here!
Truly great memories. :)
Pre-race coverage beginning in 20 minutes on NBC.
I had company all morning and so I missed much of the back story and lead in shows today... Now I need to tune in and focus on this race :~D
Yay! Thanks for the thread!! I just got out of bed. Has Funny Cide raced yet?
No, Monarchos won the Derby in 1:59 4/5.
You did a wonderful job posting this thread!
One more chore and I'll be back.
What's with CITGO sponsoring the race? I think I'll turn my channel to something else...
okay then...
That's true. I had forgotten. He tied Sham. Three horses in 130+ years have run the Derby in under two minutes -- but Red still holds the record. Someday a horse will come along to beat it, but it's been 33 years so far. Every year that goes by when no horse beats Red's record adds more luster to it.
I was 12 years old in 1973 and living in Baltimore, when I watched the Triple Crown races on TV. I fell in love with Secretariat and dreamed of being jockey; feeling the wind in my face and the thud of pounding hoofs on the track matching the beat of my heart and seeing nothing but the finish line ahead. Hell, I really wanted to be Secretariat. But dreams of being a jockey were not meant to be since at 12, I was already a healthy 55.
I still live in Maryland and Ive been to the track a couple of times and to some steeplechases and equestrian events, but Im not into gambling. I just like watching the horses run.
I also thought that Seabiscuit, another great American story, was one the best movies Ive ever seen, definitely in my top ten.
Secretariat was the most amazing horse I ever saw. Thinking of how beautiful he was still brings tears to my eyes. Thanks for the link Wolfstar.
You know, Ive been thinking lately of taking riding lessons. Its never too late to fulfill a dream. Ill never be a jockey but I do still love horses.
Barbaro trains in Fair Hill, Maryland, not far from me so he is my sentimental favorite today.
