May 20, 2006 Sen. George Allen's re-election race this year is more about 2008 than 2006. Democrats know unseating the incumbent Virginia Republican would be a long shot, but they hope that their best attempt will tarnish his image, force him to drain his $7 million campaign accounts and take the wind out of his presidential sails. Jim Webb, a former Republican who was President Reagan's secretary of the Navy, and Harris Miller, a Northern Virginia technology executive, will face off June 13 for the Democratic nomination. The race has piqued the interest of national leaders. Sen. Charles E. Schumer of New York, who heads the Democrats' Senate campaign arm, told reporters last week they just might find "Cinderella" in Virginia this year.

Schumer is doing a fantastic job with the Dem Senate recruits for 2008, while Dole's efforts have been underwhelming to say the least.
Liddy has been a complete disaster. They really need to replace her.
It's too late - she is a nice lady and a fine Senator, but she didn't do much for the 2006 election cycle at all.
Every dollar they spend against Allen in VA will be a dollar wasted for them.
I agree. Sadly, practically
everyone in the Senate is
doing just that...voting to
escalate their base in an
election.
I went to the Senate url
yesterday and tallied what
I saw on C-SPAN with what
was recorded there. Everyone
who stepped to the mic to
offer an immigration amendent
or to speak against it was a
Class I Senator...he/she was
up for reelection in November!
Senate Leader Frist was nowhere
to be seen. But he appeared on
FoxNews at 6 a.m. today...after
all the voting was finished.
How has Allen been voting in the recent Senate immigration "efforts"--is he pro or anti-amnesty? Is he pro or anti-enforcement?
Frankly, until I read this article I didn't know that Jim Webb and Harris Miller were beholden to Saudi Arabian and terrorist money and support.
I really don't think George Allen is going to have any difficulty with these two characters.
I like Allen. I really want him to step up and be more of a leader though. I think the senate is screaming for a conservative voice to take on McCain. I wish he could be that voice.
Don't see it happening though.
George Allen ping.
Won't she rotate out as Chair after this cycle?
"The only guy to the right of Allen on immigration is Tancredo."
That is incorrect. Senators Sessions, Coburn and Inhofe have far better records amongst many others. That is not even looking at the House.
The only three with a worse record in Virginia are Warner, Moran and Scott. That means Allen ranks 10th out of 13 for VA alone.

That's nice that Schumer is recruiting for 2008! :)
I don't want the NRSC recruiting a Senator for my State -- that is up to those of us who live in a State.
NRSC shouldn't be involved until after the primary IMHO!
[rolling eyes] Good grief, some of you folks just never let up. I distinctly recall similar gloom 'n doom pronouncements months before the Nov 04 elections... and the Nov 02 elections... and the Nov 00 elections.
If only some of you would put a bit more energy into helping conservatives win.
Plus he's taking that down-home schtick a little too far. Chewing tobacco at rallies and fundraisers? I mean c'mon. He doesn't need to resort to gimmicks.
Which has nothing to do with Elizabeth Dole. Stop moving the bar.
