President Bush speaks alongside Attorney General Alberto Gonzales in Washington March 16, 2006. Bush has long opposed making English the country's national language, Gonzales said on Friday, the day after the Senate voted to do so. (Jason Reed/Reuters)

NR, you better be careful, the Bush bots are not going to like you. Tsk, tsk, we conservatives have to be wary of offending the Bushies with such posts.
Just by future demographics, with the help of Rinos, English won't be the predominent language here anyway.

English should be our National language, but knowing and speaking other languages is not a negative, but can be very beneficial. My life, jobs and future changed for the better after learning to speak both Spanish and Portuguese. A good knowledge of French also helped me read French publications. Our kids are all tri-lingual and one speaks five languages. Five of nine grandkids are also bi-lingual. All of us have all benefited from that knowledge, especially in school.
"He who is ignorant of foreign languages knows not his own," wrote Goethe, and I believe he was right. I really learned English grammar while studying Spanish grammar. After years of rote English grammar in grade and high school, it soon became clear to me. After reading the Mexican, Argentine and Brazilian press every week, I also know that the MSM in those countries are angrier at Bush than we are.

He said Bush has instead long supported a concept called "English-Plus," believing that it was good to be proficient in more than one language. When did he decide that our collective "second language" would be Spanish, like it or not. I don't remember voting on it. Great way to Balkanize a nation of (sigh-legal until recently) immigrants.

The signal that Bush sent out on language is rather minor. Maybe it is time for everybody to calm down and let this issue resolve itself. This self inflicted version of a conservtive water torture does not justify a mutual self destruction. Business will not back down on their desire for a guest worker program and some form of an accelerated naturalization process. So, we either wage war to the death or allow cooler heads to prevail. It strikes me as rather odd that so many people are exploding in anger over a few reflective thoughts that really don't carry much substance. It makes me think that there are a whole bunch just aching for a fight and some devious souls doing their best to provoke a conservative cat fight.

So did you hear about the Iranian terrorists that came across the mexican border to the US. They were sitting at a cafe in California and one said to the other, "Try not to look suspicious--speak only on Spanish."

Today Tony Snow said BUSH supports the amendment, now I am reading where Gonzalez says he doesn't.
This is actually very good. No matter what position he takes he will be 'bashed' for it so if he supports both sides of an issue he can be 'bashed' TWICE as much.
In keeping with his steadily declining poll numbers this can ONLY help them to go further downhill.
Soon he will be in the 20's and he can go back to just taking ONE side of an issue.

I think someone should introduce a bill in the Senate to make Spanish the official language. It would be interesting to see who would vote for it (I'm sure there will be some).

..was listening to Mr. Harper up in Canada addressing Parliament--sliding back and forth from English to French.
It feels Schizophrenic to listen to.
Perhaps many in our government would like the same structure--only with English and Spanish...

I think what we're seeing is Bush's acknowlegement that he no longer has to worry about running again. He's in his 2nd and final term so, he's just going to do whatever he wants and to heck with the base and to heck with the House and Senate.

What a damn surpise.
I hope the Republicans in the House realize I've started lighting into Politicians on both aisles among collegues, family and friends now. Advocating throwing every bum out that goes along with this. I've spared the House...so far..but these are people that are generally "swing" voters. The House has a choice, save their political hides and kill this, stand for enforcement first, or I open fire on them too.

Well, it has been an interesting thread. Of course you knew it would be when you found and posted it. /;-)
There have been some very funny posts and of course the "trolls vs. bots" exchanges. But all in all some excellent discussion and most importantly lots of fun.
Great find and post.

I don't want to say the president has abandon the core beliefs of the Republican party but...
I feel as if I am a 5-year old standing by the road, in a desert, with a suitcase and my teddy bead in hand, watching my dad drive way, saying "it for your own good, son".
