What is your view on the Senate proposals regarding the English language?
I support the statement that English is the 'national language' of the U.S.
I support the statement that English is the 'common and unifying language'
Either; they both make an important point
Neither; they are unnecessary and possibly racist

I guess this question changes daily. But while channel surfing, I see National language of English is polling in the 40's.
Also on TV they quote La Raza as saying that they will pull support for immigration reform with an English language provision. Sounds like that makes it the best part of the whole mess for America.

For a liberal site, the results are quite stunning.

Personaly, I would rather that Latin be our National Language.
As Julius Caesar would say, "Quae cum ita sunt!"

"But while channel surfing, I see National language of English is polling in the 40's."
Any poll showing a figure in the 40s for this, is completely bogus. I would guess that English-as-official-language has at least 60% approval, maybe much higher. Americans do NOT want a country balkanized by language.

Alternatives 1 and 2 should not have been posed as alternate viewpoints; many - including myself - would choose both.

What will the amendment ultimately mean? Will Spanish be removed from government signs and documents, and English be a requirement for citizenship, or is it just a feel-good provision with no teeth? Seriously asking, not criticizing the amendment.

'common and unifying language'
That's politico speech which means nothing and will cause more problems. Must have been proposed by Trent Lott or somebody of the same ilk.

"Screw La Raza."
Years ago, in my liberal days, I was a volunteer for Cesar Chavez's UFW union, and I had some contact with La Raza. They were a**holes; we white folks did all the work, and all La Raza wanted to do was prance around and talk tough. They were useless.

La Raza aka 'the race' is a racist Reconquista organization.
For them to call English language rule 'racist' is very think with irony.

What is your view on the Senate proposals regarding the English language? English is America's official language regardless of any declaration from Congress. The official language of any nation is the language that its laws are written in.
That doesn't mean one must speak it, write it, or read it but it is the official language nonetheless.

I'm too lazy to google "La Raza". What is it?

How in the heck can this be considered racist? I did not know that your race determined what language you speak. I am Caucasian and speak 3 languages...how does this affect me?
