PENN HILLS, Pa. -- Parents and at least one school board member said they believe an elementary school in Pennsylvania overreacted when it suspended 14 students earlier this month for mixing sugar and Kool-Aid crystals and calling it "Happy Crack."
Officials in the Penn Hills School District said the kids were suspended for imitating drug activity.
The students put the mixture in plastic bags and labeled it "Happy Crack."
But some parents said they don't think that should have gotten the students suspended from Shenandoah Elementary School.
School Board Member Erin Vecchio told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that she agreed with the parents.
"My own kids used to make it at school. It's Kool-Aid and sugar," Vecchio told the newspaper. "It's colored. It doesn't look like drugs. It looks like Pixy Stix. I didn't find anything wrong with it."
The principal and school superintendent haven't commented on the incident.
Lik-em-sticks :)
This is one you can still find in the stores here. They still taste good too!
Okay, I'm going to have to search that earlier link to the retro candy store and start looking now.
Thanks for the link. They actually have candy cigs! It says they had to change the name to candy sticks.
New crayons do it for me. I LOVE a box of new sharp crayons. Always like to buy those for the kids.
How about wax lips, and those little wax bottles with liquid inside?
Oh, yeah- Lik-em sticks, with a chaser of Mountain Dew. Probably less healthy than cocaine in the long run.
I was the lab assistant in HS chemistry. The last day of school I had to inventory the equipment in the drawers.
Every time I opened one, there was a little explosion and a puff of purple smoke.
Nitrogen Triiodide
I think they were actually a wintergreen flavor, because that sounds exactly like my faves. I still pick some up every now and again when I see them. they just bring back many fond memories.
I preferred Pixies with a Dew chaser. The heart racing was always a joy.
Our Target store has a bunch of retro candy in it. Baseball gumballs, the wax bottles, sixlets, pixie stix, and what are those things--candied dots? You know on the large strip of paper, and you bit them off of the paper? Also candy necklaces and some of the retro gum.
OH! How about those Ice Cubes--the chocolate squares in the gold foil? I loved those!
The other thing I am missing is Bubs Daddy bubble gum and Charms suckers. Though, I could probably not handle them very well now.
By the way, those wax bottles don't have the same appeal for me anymore. They are just too...waxy. LOL.
Hi, Blue Jays! Thanks for the pics! Brings back memories! I wonder if you can still buy this stuff? I know there are websites that sell nostalgic candy. Have to check it out!
Should have called it "Happy Prozac". Everything would be fine.
