The United States long has been a source of irritation for the rest of the world, but the news is worse this year.
While Europeans and Asians and Arabs increasingly have disliked U.S. policies or specific U.S. leaders in recent years, Americans were liked and admired.
Polls show an ominous turn. Majorities around the world think Americans are greedy, violent and rude, and fewer than half in countries such as Poland, Spain, Canada, China and Russia think Americans are honest.
"We found a rising antipathy toward Americans," said Bruce Stokes of the Pew Global Attitudes Project, which interviewed 93,000 people in 50 countries over four years.
Few analysts expect more than marginal improvements, short of another Sept. 11.
"In my judgment, you're going to see a lot of this hostility disappear only when various countries really feel they need friendly relations with the United States, probably for their own security," said Richard Solomon, a veteran diplomat and negotiator who is president of the U.S. Institute of Peace, a federally funded nonpartisan think tank. "It will probably take some major event for that to take place."
The dislike is accelerating among youth, Stokes said. For example, 20 percent of Britons younger than 30 have an unfavorable opinion of Americans, double the percentage of 2002.

Most leftists in the United States think this - just take a trip to any college campus or go to a major Hollywood film.

Baloney. Everyone knows a poll can be skewed by manipulating the sample and by how the questions are worded. This is a P(H)EW poll whose only purpose is to bolstert the lib mantra that Bush has turned our friends into enemies around the world...in preparation for the upcoming midterms.
The Guardian sees every tragedy as an excuse to somehow blame America or a way to rush over the bodies of the dead on the way to achieving their One World agenda. They are a commie rag that considers individuals grist for the mill as a new commie Utopia is built.

No the article...sorry...I apologize. These articles are all the same and try to sterotype Americans. What in essence they are referring to are the white anglo saxon Americans. Americans come in every creed and color and to say the majority of world hates us, is totally stupid.
The world without the US would be bad news for the EU. They just are to bloody stupid to figure out they will not be the next superpower. If the US falls, Russia and China will be able to bully the free world with impunity along with their muslim allies. The EU could'nt even stop genocide in Europe how could it stand alone against the SCO alliance. Oh right it cant without the US. People, they have hated us since the marshall plan after WW2.Bush is just a figure to demonize because we went to war to kill terrorists instead of appeasing radical muslims. This is nothing more than a bad case of international penis envy and outright foaming at the mouth hate. If the truth is known they will probably join with the tyrants like russia and china to try and destroy the US in the future. The EU is government is about as communist as possible and the bloc is starting to look more and more like the ghosts of the USSR.We need to stay frosty and watch these backstabbers.I only hope its not to late for our British brothers.

My overseas travels showed me people as boorish and provincial (and shockingly dishonest) as any "ugly American," even among the "sophisticated" Europeans.
