Time for a new FreeRepublic folding@home thread.
Our FreeRepublic team of 325+ members comprised primarily of Free Republic members in good standing have banded together to donate their excess CPU cycles to a worthy cause. Via distributed computing, millions of computers around the world, contribute directly to scientific research, in the quest for a greater understanding of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Cancer, and Mad Cow (BSE).
Currently, the team is in 108th place (with 991 active CPUs - 34,150 completed Work Units and more than 6,000,000 points).
This is an entirely voluntary program, and if you want to learn more, please see the links posted below (or read one of the previous 16 folding threads)
Welcome aboard!

Cool! LOTSA nice folk here. I am indebted to Turbopilot for helping me with a nasty bug I got on the computer....believe me, he spent a good chunk of time.
Ever since I came to FR, I swear, I think my teeth are 30% whiter!
Yay! Into the 50's for me!
Congratulations it seems so slow going when you are crawling up the list.
A few interesting stats:
1.) 10,000 points doesn't get you into the Top 110 on the FR team.
2.) We have 6 members over 100,000 points (andyk should be joining this exclusive club within days)
3.) 40,000 points will not get you into the Top 25
4.) We have 37 members over 30,000 points ( Bush_Democrat, TChad and FrogMom are less than 400 points away from this milestone)
5.) We have 52 members over 20,000 points
6.) We have 110 members over 10,000 points (8 additional members within 800 points of 10K)
7.) Klutz_dohanger is over 1.6 million points and lrenh is closing in on 500,000 points.
Yeah, we have an awesome team!

For those of us who've given up on catching up with Klutz, lrenh, Malsua, texas_booster, davemaher, LSimpson and andyk:
It takes 352 points to get into the Top 300 on the FR team
It takes 1,250 points to get into the Top 250
It takes 3,620 to get into the Top 200
It takes 6,130 to get into the Top 150 and
It takes 11,602 points to break into the Top 100 on the FR team.
HAPPY FOLDING!!
My goal by 1 Oct
Top 10 total points
over 100,000 points
by 1 Jam 200,000 points
Speaking of the Holiday sale at Fry's I have some $$ burning a hole in my pocket. I think it's time for a new system. Can you give me some idea of what to get? I want to build it myself (with some help).
Thanks in advance...
It's dang hard to tell in advance what Fry's is gonna put on sale this coming weekend. Here is one source you can check if it's not in your local paper. http://www.frys-electronics-ads.com/ Also, keep in mind the ultra good deals sell out in 2-3 hours after opening. Good luck.
Thank you, Drango for the reply and the Fry's ad.
I am a little surprised I did not get more suggestions from my fellow Freepers.
Would it help if I said I am number 37 on the folding list? I used my real name (Linda_Geiger) because my freeper name was taken by someone else.
Anyway, I would like some recommendations on fast motherboards and processors.
Thanks again
Linda
http://newspaperads.mercurynews.com/ROP/ads.aspx?advid=32664&adid=3011324&cat=3525 For the best and fastest and no concern for cost...shop newegg or monarch
http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=40&threadid=1806253&enterthread=y Fry's is for the value shopper IMHO. Note that their combo deals of CPU's and motherboards will often be so good that the motherboard is essentially free! I don't think you can go wrong with any combo this weekend at least on the value side. And if you feel the need for speed, buy the most expensive combo you see this Monday! (check the price aginst newegg of course)
Well, I finally went to the site and DL'ed the Linux client for my laptop. I started it up and it immediately took all my CPU. LOL!
My fan kicked in, and the heat went up. Wow.
So I turned on my work laptop (been sitting idle for a couple of weeks now), and DL'ed the windows client for it. It seems to work better.
So I'll let that machine just Fold while I work on my real laptop. :).
It currently says that I have about 208 days until the current Work Unit ends. :)
Unless you're running it on an XT, it probably won't take that long :-)
As far as the laptop/heat issue, yup, it will definitely increase the average temp of your laptop. I keep ksysguard running all the time on my laptop(s), and have set up the temp as one of the probes. You see a 10-20 degree increase when the folding client is running. You'd get similar results from some of the other similar projects like SETI@home or the GIMPS . My wife bought a few laptop pads with fans a while back. They really help a lot on laptops, and are good to use even if your CPU is idle, as they keep your lap from cooking. :-)
I wouldn't worry about the CPU going up to 100% usage though, as this is exactly what it is supposed to do. I've never noticed a slowdown on any of the computers I've got it running on. The only instruction that gets less priority on the box is the 'idle' instruction, so if you're doing anything else, FAH is preempted. You will notice your load average increase to at least one though, as FAH will be blocked when anything else is going on.
Note to anyone wanting to fold, turn off your screensaver! Why waste a cpu drawing a screensaver when it can be folding instead!
Welcome to the team ShadowAce!
OK, I'm up and running with one machine online. Second will be online shortly.
