Police in Sierra Vista tell us that the added National Guard presence would be a "blessing" and the sheriff in Santa Cruz County also feels good about the plan.
"They love to use this, this road." Santa Cruz County Deputy Fernando Ayon says about the illegal immigrants who use the Santa Cruz Wash as a roadway.
He used to have picnics there with his family when he was a little boy.
"See here, the fence has been damaged," Ayon points out.
Now, Ayon says, the area is a well-known hot spot for illegal trafficking.
"It's everywhere you go, everywhere you look," Ayon says.
Deputy Ayon says the National Guard will offer the sheriff's office the support it needs, lending all local enforcement a hand.
Ayon explains, "We don't have the manpower or the resources to go out there and just work illegal aliens coming into Santa Cruz County as much as we would want to."
Deputy Ayon says, on any given day, there could be at least thirty illegals hiding in the area.
Right now, the sheriff says about one-third of inmates at the Santa Cruz County jail are Mexican Nationals accused of committing a crime.
"I think National Guard people or any additional people are going to be a deterrent. " says Sheriff Tony Estrada.
A deterrent to help keep these streets more safe.
"The more players that we have dealing with this issue, the easier it will be for local law enforcement. Right now, we have a tendancy to be overwhelmed," Estrada says.

Sending the National Guard "will not stop the flow of migrants, to the contrary, it will probably go up," as people try to get into the U.S. in the hope that they could benefit from a possible amnesty program, Nunez said.
Hey Jorge!
If your folks are monitoring the Conservative Response, I hope they relay to you that Mr. Nunez get's it, but you don't! ... yours 5 yrs late!
Border Security = Homeland Security

Just exactly what does Sheriff Tony think the NG will have the power to do? And just exactly how many does he expect to be stationed in his county? The boy's obviously had too much sun.
too bad this is just political posturing for the nov elections.
"Hey there, Lieutenant; we're gettin' a mite hungry out here. How 'bout you run into town in that nifty Hummer and grab us some fajitas?"
