We will continue to work cooperatively to improve security on both sides of the border ... to confront common problems like drug trafficking and crime ... and to reduce illegal immigration.

Still intends to keep the gates open.

Amazing! I thought I was hallucinating for a few minutes. It seems as though Bush finally found a way to use the spine he’s had on foreign policy the past six year, on domestic policy with the border. Short of not building a wall, he’s pledged to do all the things I recall real conservatives have said needed to be done to secure the border! National Guard on the border, more Border Patrol, more surveillance, cameras, guaranteed deportation and no more stupid mega-retarded "catch and release" program, and even though I’m not a fan of the whole worker program, that ID would be great if they make it hard to illegally duplicate, and illegals couldn’t get work and employers would be stupid to risk the consequence of hiring people without that card. I can’t wait to hear Limbaugh and Hannity on the radio tomorrow!

The democrats will be fools to oppose all this. ALL the polls, even the liberal ones taken about the border issue show that 70% to 80% or more of American CITIZENS want the border secured and illegals deported. That’s about 99% of conservatives and a significant number of the independents and the few rational democrats. If the democrats fight this, they will lose big for sure in November, as it will be so easy to paint them as anti-border security. This is awesome. Just my opinion, but I bet the Border Patrol story about them leaking Minuteman and other border watch group location and numbers to the Mexican Consulate is what made Bush have to get serious about this. He’s been in trouble about the border for a long time, but I think that might have pushed it over the edge.

I’ll bet over the next few weeks, his "approval" rating numbers go up 20 to 30%. The his conservative base, like me, is why it’s been so far down. I’d give him a favorable now. THAT is the President I voted for two times. The only thing that would make it even better the next few months would be Bin-Laden being found dead in Afghanistan, and Justice Stevens or Ginsburg retiring so the Democrats can froth at the mouth demanding a flaming liberal to take their place. A huge majority of the American people want what Bush put forward tonight. The Democrats took a big hit tonight with this speech.

Step one is secure the borders. The rest, we can talk about after you secure the borders. Don't ask me to trust you on immigration reform if you can't even secure the borders.

If the borders are sealed, the problem becomes very solvable.

Fail to secure the borders, and nothing we do will work.

No surprises here:
"Mexico is our neighbor and our friend."
Yeah, that must be why they flood us with the dregs of their society and illegal drugs, and break our laws with impunity. Our amigos . . .
Oh, and the National Guard won't be actually doing anything along the border, just standing around with thumbs up their . . . how insulted must they feel?
But it's not amnesty, it's not amnesty, it's not amnesty . . .
Strange, isn't it? We will be able to supervise millions of our friends, Mexican lawbreakers: locate them, register them, take their digital fingerprints, supervise them in the payment of fines, and in leaving and returning--but it's unrealistic to think we could simply find them and deport them.
"I, George Walker Bush, do hereby swear that I will uphold and defend the Constitution of . . . "
Mexico!

...The men and women of our Border Patrol are doing a fine job in difficult circumstances – and over the past five years, we have apprehended and sent home about six million people entering America illegally...

...It is neither wise nor realistic to round up millions of people, many with deep roots in the United States, and send them across the border....

Kinda contradicts himself here. Claims the US Border Patrol itself has 'sent home 6 million people in the past 5 years', he then later states the deportation canard that 'it is not realistic to round up millions of people'.

I'm wondering what Bush will say. I am living this Illegal Immigration nightmare everyday in California. But, it's a nightmare for a few reasons in particular

1. I'm trying to move from one place to another. So far, I've moved everything myself. I have couches and a washer/ dryer to move, and no moving company wants any part of it. Too small.

I've offered a couple of college kids 100 bucks to move these three items from my place to a place right across the street. No go. They want 100 a peice, and they warn me that if they get hurt, I should have insurance. (Do they intend to sue me?) They don't want the job otherwise. It would have taken them all of 30 minutes for everything.

So, I ask my Property Manager who would do it? He says "Pablo" I know Pablo. His plan is to go to the local 7-11 and pick up a couple guys. Pablo's guys will do it for the $100 of course.

I can't stand the options here. I will find a way, without using illegal help. $200 bucks is crazy, but I may have to do it.

2 We are having one hell of a time at work, replacing three housekeepers. It seems no one has the correct paperwork. We've already had two people fail background. When we try talking to a citizen (a woman we see here from time to time) , she don't want the job. We pay $11 an hour to start. Those are not "slave wages" The same person will gladly take $9 an hour to sell shoes at the local Payless.

I'm not trying to say what Bush will likley say "Jobs Americans just won't do" because I know that if I were in anyplace but Spanish-immersion land (California), it would be easier to find folks to do the work. This place is a mix of ME ME ME spoiled rotteness, and ego.

The real reason we're in this mess is becuase nothing has been done about it for so long that it's become a way of life. It's not that the girl I mentioned wouldn't work for $11 an hour, it's that she won't do that job at any reasonable price! She's been brought up to belive it's beneath her.

These are real problems, happening to real people. I'm not saying that folks from places like Ohio don't have a right to their opinions, but they certainly aren't experiencing this think first hand. Our Housekeeping Manager has had to work 16 hours a day. He's about to walk out himself.

So, I need solutions, not problems. Either I need an American or Registered Alien to take these jobs, or I need a guest worker. Either way, I've got work to be done.

"Second, to secure our border, we must create a temporary worker program."

What logic. LOL!

"This program would match willing foreign workers with willing American employers for jobs Americans are not doing."

LOL. All of the sudden new business lobbies will spring up, "Us too, us too, American are not doing the jobs we have!"

The solutions sounded rather cosmetic and without substance. I would have liked to hear some policy suggestions that would address the problem in a more comprehensive manner. Basically, he said, "we'll get to it - eventually".

from the speech:
"English allows newcomers to go from picking crops to opening a
grocery … from cleaning offices to running offices … from a life
of low-paying jobs to a diploma, a career, and a home of their own.
When immigrants assimilate and advance in our society, they realize
their dreams ... they renew our spirit ... and they add to the unity of America."

So, once all the illegals have learned English and been made legitimate...
who will fill that pool of people that will do "Jobs That Americans
Won't Do"?

Hmmm...I guess that's when we'll be doing the next amnesty package.
Another 20 years from now.

I'm surprised so many people are being so hard on Bush after that speech. He only said 90% of the things that people like Tancredo who are serious about border security have been calling for. I haven't been a Bush fan at all on domestic policy other than taxes, but I don't get all the hostility towards him by folks here. I mean, if he's serious and does what he says, how is it a bad thing??? Am I missing something?

In the end he is giving amnesty, nothing to really secure the border, just great new ways to watch them pass by with all the new technical gadgets.

He suggested nothing that will get officers arresting illegals inland at all.
I also heard nothing about confiscating all their uninsured cars.
I heard nothing about the Feds starting to finance the billions upon billions of cost to the states in education, hospitals and lower wages on many skilled jobs as well as the cr@p jobs.

What incentive is there for the illegals to sign up to be legal citizens. If we do not put a certain date on them to sign up, are we going to deport them? Are we just going to let them run around the country with no enforcement or consequences. This whole amnesty thing raises more questions than it solves. What a mess. Things are going to get very ugly very soon. A real fence is the only answer.

"We are a Nation of laws, and we must enforce our laws. We are also a Nation of immigrants, and we must uphold that tradition, which has strengthened our country in so many ways. These are not contradictory goals – America can be a lawful society and a welcoming society at the same time."

True they are not contradictory. We welcome a million legally by our laws every year.

Bush is using shame and guilt again.

I can understand allowing people who have been here for five or more years, have jobs and a family and haven't been arrested, to remain if they want to be American citizens and give up their former allegience.

I can understand allowing anyone who has served in our military honorably to become an American citizen.

But a blanket amnesty as proposed by Bush under a "guest worker plan" is wrong, is unfair and provides some kind of favored nation status to Mexico. Sorry - we owe them not one dinero.

As far as sending 5,000 National Guardsmen to the border, that isn't enough. Its a sop. And what are they to do? Provide technical expertise?

We need several times that number who are armed and able to physically stop illegal invaders.

We need a law that allows the Federal government to sieze the assets of any business which knowingly hires illegals and sell them to defray government expenses cleaning up this mess.

We need a National I.D. card linked to a birth certificate database to identify illegals when they seek benefits or a job so they can be deported.

We need a wall along the Mexican border to make it clear we mean business and to keep illegals out.

And most of all, Congress needs to heed the wishes of the vast majority of Americans on this subject and ignore exploiters of foreign labor, Latino pressure groups, and most of ..... President Bush on this subject.

And if they don't regardless of party, they should be sent packing in June and November.

On illegal invaders and border security, Bush has lost touch with reality.

The ONLY way Americans are allwwing Congress and the President to get away with giving away our birthrights is because they really don't appreacaite what it means to be an American. More of these illegal inivaders understand that than do many of us.

This virtual high-tech fence sounds like a total loser to me. Stray dogs, jackrabbits, almost anything will set it off.

What we need is what the Israelis have built. Solid concrete, 20 feet high WITH the cameras, motion sensors and patrols.

6,000 National Guard troops doesn't sound like much to me. And I am a bit dismayed about the way he stresses that all they are doing is supporting the Border Patrol, but I guess that unless the Posse Comitatus Act is repealed, that's about all they can do.

A mixed bag speech. I give it about a 6 on a scale of 10.

I believe that illegal immigrants who have roots in our country and want to stay should have to pay a meaningful penalty for breaking the law … to pay their taxes … to learn English … and to work in a job for a number of years. People who meet these conditions should be able to apply for citizenship – but approval would not be automatic, and they will have to wait in line behind those who played by the rules and followed the law.

Uh, excuse me Mr. President, those are the same talking points that democrats are using? And I honestly feel that it is amnesty. Aliens who are here illegally need to go home to be in the back of the line, After all, we ARE a nation of laws, as you stated? Why should lawbreakers, especially alien lawbreakers, be allowed to remain in this country (in front of the line when considering that a person who has applied for citizenship from any other country has to wait IN THAT COUNTRY while the illegal alien who has sneaked across our borders gets to stay here while he waits for his legality????????????????????????????????????

Maybe I just don't get it, but that sure seems like preferential citizenship (read amnesty) for those who came to the US illegally while the immigrant who has applied legally has to wait?????

The illegals came here for one reason, and one reason alone. And that was to find a job. If the jobs that illegals are hired to do dry up, the vast majority of illegals would find their way back home. The employers of the illegals need to be fined and jailed to reverse this foreign invasion......

Before I read a single comment, I will just say that I think this speech set exactly the right tone. It emphasizes physical security but also allows for guest workers and a citizenship track, without which no system can succeed. IMHO, Bush hit this one out of the park.

I know there are some who may think it is not enough, too little, too late. To those, I say that the President does not have the luxury of pie-in-the-sky thinking. He cannot bloviate without coming up with real solutions. Some past Presidents have, but this particular President takes his responsibility seriously.

So, Kudos to President Bush. I cannot imagine a better speech to be given in this situation.

Politics as usual. No matter what, I'm paying for another welfare state.

In 2008, I'll be voting next to people who snuck into the country illegally. However, I'll be much more careful about who I vote for.

Not that it will matter...
