President's Immigration speech - Live thread

Edited on 05/15/2006 4:38:26 PM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

I searched but did not see a thread already open for tonights speech. I think this is the most important speech the President will probably make for the remainder of his term.

Mod Note:
This could turn into a whack-a-troll thread. All immigration trolls that would like to participate should post here. It'll be interesting to see if we mods can whack the trolls faster than they can sign up new accounts.
Jim

One part of the speech REALLY caught me by surprise about the mexican marine in Walter Reed.

Do you mean to tell me that non-citizens are able to enlist and be expected to defend our country?

I was under the impression that you HAD to be a US citizen in order to serve in our armed forces.

This calls for the biggest WTF EVER.

Thanks for posting. I didn't get a chance to see the speech.

Dubya will go down as one of our great presidents.

...and also GWB did make clear there is a difference between mass amnesty and mass deportation.

Yes, that's what I said - but that when he said there was a middle ground between them, he did not elaborate other than to tell us that we need to be in that middle ground = somewhere. I don't like the sound of it. I hope I'm wrong.

"- I tend to like illegals, because they're hard workers."

Sure they are hard workers but they depress wages.

Was the Bracero program started in 1945 "amnesty"?

This problem has existed for over 30 years. In 1975 my husband and I were down in the Big Bend area and were warned not to camp out in the desert or if we did, no lights and keep quiet after dark, parking way off the road. We heard trucks all night long.

That's incredible.

I have to log off--to get kids to bed--but in my misspent youth, traveling across America, we stopped at Big Bend park. It was gorgeous! Texas has some starkly beautiful scenery. (btw, I hope I'm remembering correctly that Big Bend is in Texas, LOL!)

It was an excellent speech. He summarized the problem very well, and outlined logical steps to correct it. The Senate should get its act together, and Congress should have legislation on Bush's desk fast!
I think the use of troops should be more aggressive than what the President said, meaning more of them, and faster.

I agree but these hyper active anti amnesty weirdos will say otherwise. They want a Speaker Pelosi. President Bush is a good and decent man trying to do the right thing by all the people, the real people whose lives are being affected by this legislation.

Excuse me! The Trail of Tears was perpetrated against the original inhabitants of this country.

You insult all Native Americans by comparing them to lawbreaking Mexicans.

I am embarrassed to be associated with them as "republicans" anyway.

You're a moderate at best anyway, so why don't you join the Dems rather than be embarrassed by the true conservatives in the party. You don't help the Pub party; you are part of the problem.

I posted on it earlier. My father and my grandparents legally migrated here in 1960. In 1966 my dad was told (on a green card) to go to Vietnam, or go back home, so he went to Vietnam.
