President's Immigration speech - Live thread

Edited on 05/15/2006 4:38:26 PM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

I searched but did not see a thread already open for tonights speech. I think this is the most important speech the President will probably make for the remainder of his term.

Mod Note:
This could turn into a whack-a-troll thread. All immigration trolls that would like to participate should post here. It'll be interesting to see if we mods can whack the trolls faster than they can sign up new accounts.

"If Americans are not hired for them, then I guess they are not doing them."

That is your actual belief?

George Allen will win in 2008.

Really? I didn't think someone who holds that the 2nd Amendment doesn't give an individual the right to own a gun could win the Presidency. In either party.

I'll die before Hillary or her ilk gets my vote.

That's probably how it will happen.

He refried the same ol' line, but threw in the National Guard thing which is a short lived deployment with the design to refry some conservatives back into the bean pot.

I'm not going back into that pot. Bush's failings go back much further though, back to a time when he 'could have been a contender'. He (or his advisors) blinked.

Ever since, he's been riding the Hooterville Express to Non-entity. This administration couldn't recognize a White Knight in Shining Armor if their party poured a NFL sized Gatoraide container of Mr.Clean over their collective heads. As that russian comedian would say: "What a country!"

  1. As for a demonstrable record of accomplishment domestically, there is nothing that remotely approaches the importance of, or the complexity of, (or the ingratitude for,) Bush's record on homeland defense-for-real.
  2. The clintons and the Left are playing the Right like a Spanish guitar.
  3. Do you really want the clintons to control the immigration issue? The War on Terror?

HILLARY CLINTON VOTES FOR ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS BEFORE SHE VOTES AGAINST THEM
HEAR HER NOW

What's black and white and read all over and is more self-destructive than pre-9/11 thinking?

Fear is a powerful master and the only tool available to those who have no demonstrable record on which to stand. The fact that the Republicans must resort to fearmongering simply underscores their lack of accomplishment. I refuse to respond to the "The Evil Dem would be so much worse". Without demonstrable progress on domestic issues, Republicans will not get my vote. -- Conservative Goddess

And I will add this......We are NOT all knowing. Be very, very careful of trusting in a spirit of discernment that is based in fear, else you risk sitting in judgement of a friend, not enemy.--Kimberly GG

If being all-knowing was a prerequisite to action, we would all be in a state of permanent paralysis. Interestingly, this is bill clinton's favorite demagogic ploy :

'Through a glass darkly' is bill clinton's favorite biblical metaphor and his fixers' spin-of-last-resort.

When properly misconstrued, the phrase at once captures and effectuates the clinton con perfectly, placing clinton conveniently beyond the reach of criticism, impeachment (figuratively speaking), and, most important, punishment.

It is wrong to bear false witness because we all see through [the] glass darkly.--bill clinton

THROUGH A GLASS DARKLY:
HOW DECADES OF CLINTON DOUBLE-DEALING COMPROMISED OUR NATIONAL SECURITY
Mia T, March 8, 2006

I try to base my thinking on reasoned analysis of the facts, as best as I can discern them.

And fear is not necessarily a bad thing. It can be adaptive or it can be maladaptive. And as a matter of fact, it is usually adaptive. We depend on fear for our survival. It initiates our 'fight or flight' response. It is only 20th-century psychologizing that focused undue attention on the maladaptive variety.

Fear of the islamofascist terrorists (and by extension, fear of the return of the clintons to power) is adaptive; it is appropriate.

FIGHT? OR FLIGHT?

Will we return the clintons to power and flee? Or will we elect a Republican and continue to fight? (Fleeing is tantamount to surrendering: When terrorists declare war on you and commit acts of war against you, you are perforce at war. At that point you have only one decision to make: Do you fight or do you surrender? For eight years, the clintons repeatedly chose surrender.)

As for a demonstrable record of accomplishment domestically, there is nothing that remotely approaches the importance of, or the complexity of, (or the ingratitude for,) Bush's record on homeland defense-for-real. I cannot imagine what it must do to a person to have that kind of responsibility on one's shoulders 24/7 for almost five years, not being able to talk about the successes even as the seditious Left broadcasts every 'failure' real and imagined (and self-fulfilled--think 'Tet Offensive')....

I am not a booster for the professional pol of any stripe--in my opinion we must, with time, get rid of them all--but I am sickened by this ingratitude on the Right almost as much as I am by the sedition on the Left.

It is time for a reality check.

[T]hey're using the same divide and conquer techniques. They infiltrate our political parties and organizations. They plant disinformation bombs and sow the seeds of political discontent. They are masters in the use of propaganda and rabble rousing.

Recognize the enemy for what he is and do not allow them to use divisive issues to destroy our conservative movement. We are winning. We must not be sidetracked by an issue that will be solved in due time as we elect more conservative members to our government and continue replacing liberal activist judges with constitutionalists.

The goal is the same as it's always been. We must hold the line and advance our cause. Never willingly give ground to the liberal/socialists! Never retreat! Never surrender!

The Beast must be destroyed!--

The game has not changed, we face the same enemy, same challenges. The Beast never dies!

Lopez: If you had to bet money today…do Republicans stop her?

Podhoretz: Yes—with this caveat. If the party fails to focus on the threat from Hillary and tears itself apart from within in pursuit of doctrinal purity, then those in pursuit of purity over practical politics will hand the country to Hillary in 2008.

Lopez: In the short term: If Republicans lose big in 2006, how will it reflect on 2008? Will it be a good kick-start to the GOP or just put Dems that much ahead?

Podhoretz: Here's a very good rule of thumb in politics: Losing begets losing.

Lopez: How can blogs stop Hillary? Could the left-wing blogosphere wind up a thorn in her side?

Podhoretz: Blogs can and should keep the pressure on Hillary to speak, speak, speak. She prefers to remain silent for the most part, because that way she can limit any damage her words might cause. I offer some very practical tips for bloggers in the book....

Lopez: What’s your most important piece of advice on stopping Hillary?

Podhoretz: Conservatives must avoid the siren song of schism, or all is lost.

It is very practical to deny illegal aliens residing in this country citizenship and very simple to enforce. Their offspring if born on US soil are virtually automatically granted citizenship. That does not mean we should grant their parents the same right, even if they eventually become permanent residents.

Again, what I think and what can be done are two different thing. As I said, I believe they should all be shipped back and the border walled up tight so they can't get back in unless we let them back in. But that won't happen any time soon. It would be the right thing to do.

Frankly, I believe only one thing will force what needs to be done, to actually be done. I believe that it will take several arab islamo-fascist who learn a bit of Spanish, making themselves appear as mexican migrant workers, slipping across the border, then rendezvousing at a predetermined place and time, each having brought over different components or cash to buy said components and them assembling a delivery system to detonate a chemical biological or nuclear weapon in an American city killing hundreds of thousands of American, before the outcry is so loud that the government on both sides of the aisle finally does something substantive. That's always how it happens. You never get a traffic light or stop sign at an intersection until someone, usually a kid, has been killed by a speeding driver. Conversely, the border problem won't really be fixed until a bunch of Americans lose their lives because it wasn't fixed yet. That's the pathetic nature of bureaucracy. That's just what I think though. It would be nice to fix the problem before that happens, but I fear that it will take a mushroom cloud over a bit city before it gets fixed. I hope to he11 I'm wrong, but then I hoped most Americans would have the intelligence to see the war in Afghanistan and Iraq as the front lines in fighting the islamic war against western civilization, and I've been disappointed on that one also. Americans watch too much stupid tv, don't know history, and are just stupid enough to get other Americans killed by voting when they don't even know what's at stake. That's another fix I'd put in place. IQ tests in order to be a registered voter. But then the democrats would really never have a chance, so that definitely would never happen.

Anyway, gotta get to sleep. Lost too much sleep over this thread as it is. Early reveille tomorrow.
