President's Immigration speech - Live thread

Edited on 05/15/2006 4:38:26 PM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

I searched but did not see a thread already open for tonights speech. I think this is the most important speech the President will probably make for the remainder of his term.

Mod Note:
This could turn into a whack-a-troll thread. All immigration trolls that would like to participate should post here. It'll be interesting to see if we mods can whack the trolls faster than they can sign up new accounts.

"I'll go even further! Declare hunting season, bag illegals and EAT them!"

Uhhh..I don't think anyone is proposing that are they? If they are they are insane.

I remember Saturday matinees for kids at the movies in the 40's, as well as radio favorites such as the Whistler, The Green Hornet, The Saint, The Shadow, The Man Called X & Fibber McGee.

"Sorry friend but I had multiple sources on Simcox from every point on the political compass."

So you said. But, alas, your only cite before bailing was SPLC.

They want all the illegals out NOW and a WALL, which is plain stupid, not to mention unrealistic.

Unrealistic? Its working for Israel keeping Hamas from blowing them up. China built one over 2000 miles long. No whats unrealistic is "the virtual fence". I agree with Rush. If its such a great idea, lets see how well the capital and white house do with a virtual fence.

Those numbers are in dispute and most accept that the number for bush was in the mid to low 30s.

Link?

Have any basis for your wild cost estimates?

A fence is a deterrent, not an absolute barrier. And they are market tested and shown to be effective. That's why there are so many millions of miles of fences built all over the world. If they didn't work, nobody would be building them.

If you were asked by a company to analyze how best to keep unwanted persons from the grounds would you respond by proposing a wall 'a billion feet high' etc etc? Of course not. So why do so in such a serious situation as US national security?

No solution is perfect. But a wall/fence makes a lot more sense than nothing at all. And it will not cost anywhere close to half a trillion dollars nor take 20 years to build. And I'll bet you know that.

Again, I'm not anti-Hispanic, in fact I was the "go see guy" when the fellows got ripped off for their pay.
I could have shined them on to the California Labor Board, but they were years behind in responses.
Having stacked tile roofs in California's hot summer, I did what I could (and very effectively if I may say so myself) to see they got what was due to them. In the 2 plus years I did this, I never did have one of the suspects say the the mucachos were lying. But overall, Mexico has to clean up their act.

We are not allowed to post photographs of the people that desire to overthrow Mexico. It is called inciting. What make you special?

Build a 100 foot wall made out of the bleached bones of anchor babies

Something like 95% of the murder warrants in Los Angeles are for illegal aliens. Why not build a monument to Aztlán out of the bones of the real victims?

http://thetarpit.blogspot.com/2005/11/bush-amnesty-smoking-gun-found-again_03.html

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,122297,00.html

In 1986, there were about 2.5 million illegal aliens in the U.S. who Congress and the Reagan administration regarded as being “safe” – that is, not having committed serious crimes or otherwise being dangerous, and having sufficient ties to American life to be allowed to remain here. Many members of Congress, chiefly Democratic members, regarded the amnesty of these illegal aliens a sine qua non of any attempt to reform our immigration laws. Reagan recognized this, and, being the optimist that he was, saw something humane and profitable in affording this relatively small group of illegal aliens legal status.

In exchange for legal status for the group, Reagan insisted that the magnet attracting illegal aliens to the United States be removed by extinguishing any incentive for U.S. employers to hire illegal aliens. In tandem with the amnesty, Reagan campaigned for employer sanctions for hiring illegal aliens, sanctions so stringent that many at the time regarded them as draconian.

Reagan reasoned that if an employer were fined for hiring an illegal alien (as much as $1 million in the worst cases), any payroll savings achieved by the hiring would be wiped out by the fine. In effect, it would be more expensive to hire illegal aliens than to hire Americans or lawful permanent residents. The few illegal aliens who continued to take the gamble and cross the border would be intercepted by a robust and more generously funded Border Patrol.

While Reagan’s 1986 immigration reforms (search) can at least be called rational, they were a failure. Today, there are between 8 million and 11 million illegal aliens in the United States. The majority of them crossed our southern border and has found employment — illegal employment, but employment nonetheless. This is attributed to Sen. Ted Kennedy’s eventual gutting of the enforcement mechanism for Reagan's employer sanctions, and successive administrations refusing to give our Border Patrol the resources it needs to achieve its mission.

In 1986, though, President Reagan showed a clear recognition between wrong and right. If U.S. employers were to gain from the employment of people whose very presence in our country was a crime, then they would at least have to pay for it.

How far we’ve come since 1986. At the moment, there are two amnesty bills pending in Congress, and both predicate an illegal aliens’ eligibility on the very thing that President Reagan fought so hard to stamp out: illegal alien employment.

I WANT A WALL from coast to coast, but I'm still willing to realise that Bush was closer to pointing to the right direction than not finally on this. Good grief. And I know I am very conservatively socially and fiscally and have been all my life, and I was pleasently surprised by this speach. So I refuse to believe that most border conscious Conservatives are annoyed by this speach. That's bologna. My wife and I both heard it and then both read it and we both got the same thing from it. "Finally. What a turn around for him. Finally proposing many of the things that need to be done to fix the border. It's a good start, more to be done later." I totally reject the idea that most conservatives hated this speach, because the simple fact is, the democrats oppose ALL the things Bush mentioned doing, and they are all things most Americans want done.

If this speach wasn't good enough for some and they can't even say it's a good start, then frankly, they're impossible to please people who have no clue how our system works. You can't change something that big over night, you have to make a gradual course correction over the course of years. It took decades to get this screwed up, it will likely take decades to fix. That's a fact of life and all this b******g and moaning about it doesn't change that reality.

ROFL!!!! Hehehe .. keyboard warning, please.

Didn't know about this .... 2,000 miles of this ..??? Wonder if Congress is going to vote for this when they're screaming about the budget, deficits, Iraq???

Ulises Torres explores along the U.S.-Mexico border fence where it meets the Pacific Ocean in Imperial Beach, Calif., April 27, 2006. Torres was fishing with his father at the Playas de Tijuana in Tijuana, Mexico. Though these fences are criticized for shifting would-be border-crossers to more dangerous and remote spots, they do make it harder for illegal immigrants to reach urban areas where they can slip into a car and head for the nation's interior. Now, Congress is considering putting many more such barriers along the 2,000-mile U.S.-Mexico border, which already has 83

Fairfield is a pretty large county; most of it well to do. Not all of it is packed with limousine libbies, nor liberal GOPers. And not ALL of us use illegal aliens to do any sort of work for us.

And please, please, PLEASE stop misusing the term RINO! REPUBLICAN IN NAME ONLY, means what it says...it do NOT mean a GOPer who isn't a Conservative!

I wonder how many people would want to have virtual locks on the virtual doors to their homes.

It is this kind of deceptive wordplay that I find most aggravating by those who clearly do not want to do anything at all about creating a barrier.
