SAN JOSE, California -- San Jose Sharks fans were in a nasty mood last night, loudly booing the Canadian national anthem before the start of Game 5 of the Western Conference semifinal.
The Sharks are playing the Edmonton Oilers.
Annemarie Martin had barely began singing O Canada when many in the sellout crowd of 17,496 began booing. The sound was so loud it nearly drowned out Martin.

On occasion, when Canadian Sports fans boo the U.S. anthem, we get to hear here how that proves that all Canadians are anti-American, yada-yada.
I've never seen it that way, and I'm sure it's just team rivalry.
It'll be interesting to see if Albertans return the favor..

I agree. I hope it's not a case of get even with them for stuff some stupid Canucks have done to Americans like the Junior Hockey team awhile back.
Meanwhile the Mexican National Anthem continues to be celebrated in California. Sorry, I had to be the immigration stuff in this thread somehow. (sarcasm off)

Bad form. Just because they did it to us, doesn't mean we should be doing it to them.

Montreal fans are famous for their booing of the US anthem.
Bruins playoffs 2 years ago we returned the favor by singing the Canadian National anthem that Rene Rancort stopped singing and let the fans take it. It was an awesome moment.
A canadians fan sitting near me was shaking people's hands he was so blown away.
I then dumped beer on his head and beat the tuck out of him. Just kidding about the last part.

I'm not for this. It's low-class, if nothing else.
Canada is our friend, after all, even if we disagree on some things.

San Jose is in California, last I checked. Those people are communist. Again, last I checked.

We should really, really dispense with this kind of crap. Apologies to my Canadian friends.

I don't like Canada politics BUT this is a sporting event. Booing a country's National Anthem is in VERY POOR TASTE.

You like "Oh Canada, we stand on guard for thee..."? Against whom? The American tourists? The Eskimos? The French?
Canada has lived free off the American nuclear shield for sixty years. They have not one ounce of gratitude, not one. They constantly tell us how to run the world, even though we don't run it. They hate us and are proud to show it.
When I hear their anthem, I give out a big booooooooooooooo.

I agree. It's disrepectful and a very juvenile thing to do.
