WASHINGTON - President Bush on Monday will call for deploying 5,000 National Guard troops along the border with Mexico in support of Border Patrol efforts to keep out illegal immigrants, a senior White House source told NBC News.

The idea is to commit the troops for two years or until enough Border Patrol officers are recruited and trained to fill the gap, the source said ahead of Bush’s speech to the nation at 8 p.m. ET.

Five thousand troops for the entire US-Mexican border? Wow. That doesn't seem nearly enough to do the job properly.

Man, the president has really painted himself into a corner on this issue.

Yawn.

Bush is pro open borders who takes orders from the President of North America, Vicente Fox.

Anyone who is applauding him for this is a FOOL.

I'm with you. 25 to 30000 would be a more reasonable number.

Most numbers I've seen say the total should be up around 35,000, http://www.humaneventsonline.com/article.php?id=14807

How long will individual deployments be? How long will the total force be in place?

"Pentagon officials stressed that the troops would not be used for law enforcement, and that they would not participate in apprehending or detaining suspects under any circumstances. Instead, the troops would provide aerial and electronic surveillance and communications support along the 2,000-mile-long border."

5,000 unarmed border patrol!!! Now that sounds effective. The title was suppose to include "(pandering, band-aid alert)"

I'm hoping these are all trial balloons and the President comes out tonight with something of substance.

That doesn't surprise me. Does anyone remember just after 9/11, there were NG in the airports? When that made everyone nervous it was revealed that they were actually carrying unloaded weapons. Geeeeesh! what weanies!

LOL. Maybe they will work closely with Mexican officials to make sure the Minutemen build a fence in compliance with Mexican zoning laws.
