The poll, conducted by the Wall Street Journal, is the latest to indicate a slump in public support for the US leader as his Republican party heads into the campaign for mid-term elections in November.
In the poll, released in the newspaper's online edition, Bush has lost six percentage points in a month.
Iraq remains the main concern. Twenty-eight percent of Americans say it is one of the two most important topics, up from 23 percent in April, followed by IMMIGRATION (16 percent) and the price of petrol (gasoline) (14 percent).
Only 24 percent of the 1,003 people asked between May 3-8 said they believed the United States was "heading in the right direction". According to the Journal, 69 percent said "things have pretty seriously gotten off on the wrong track".
Bush is closing in on the unpopularity level of President Richard Nixon (24 percent) at the moment of his resignation in 1974 over the Watergate scandal.
"Our debt to GDP is at about 65.4 %"

He'll be in office longer than that...it will take the Democrats until about May of 09 to wrap up the impeachment proceedings. It's coming, and Dubya only has himself to blame for not getting out the truth instead of letting the MSN frame the debate.
One question: Does that include the guys in DUBAI that George Bush wanted to sell our ports to?
Come on! I saw a poll this morning that had Bush's approval ratings at .05%. If your numbers are correct, he had a big bounce around noon. Go Bush!
And this factoid underlines the real reason public opinion is so misguided - - the media. You name it, MSM network television and radio news, entertainers (think obedient Hillary acolytes Leno and Letterman here), "news"papers, and schools (the education medium) are a perpetual counterfeit chorus of how everything's heading in the wrong direction.
So very many (good but ignorant) people have no idea just how good they have it and how well the country is being led by President Dubya; and, they have no idea just how miserable they would be if the media-Marxists ever got their way.
The American people have been continuously hammered with non-stop brow-beatings into thinking that Dubya is incompetent, the war was not necessary, that the economy is bad...you get the point.
The media-Marxists have been in a pitched battle to weaken our president and our country, to indoctrinate an artificial need for the far-lefies to "fix" things.
They work overtime to prevent the slightest shred of good or flattering news about Dubya, the Troops, the economy, or any little suggestion that things are headed the RIGHT WAY from seeing the light of day.
.
Good analysis.
the MSM/DNC (same thing) tried to use trumped up polls last two elections to sway the actual elections themselves. They lost anyway, so now they figure the approach can still work but they just have to redouble their efforts in that area and do it in a more dramatic way.
Just how long has this border problem been going on...?
Question: If the election were held today, who would you vote for: President Bush or John "treasonous" Kerry?
Answer 51.5% for Bush.
Polls Lie, elections do not!
$13.163-trillion GDP
$8.364-trillion debt
Do the math. 63.5% ratio of debt to GDP.
No, during WW2 the deficit to GDP ratio was 14-30%.
In 1946 it fell to 7%, and the next decade ran a surplus.
I think that the Republican Congress has missed a great opportunity to address the problems that need to be addressed. Instead they have continued the spending binge the Democrats were on when they got the boot.
No, I don't have to wait to blame the base, I already do, for a bunch of whining that doesn't mean a thing. Abu Graib, Valerie Plame, Harriet Myers, Dubai Port Deal, NSA, Mexican Border, Cheney's accident, to only name a few and the list goes on, of crap that adds up to nothing but innudendo and speculation. The base took the bait.
Your mistake is not a logical one, your mistake is thinking independently.
A hallmark of conservatism has always been fierce individualism, to the unending frustration of the GOP party faithful. It must be aggravating to have such political allies.
So is it safe to say that your bitch is the base whines too much?
I believe his speech on monday night will definitely raise his numbers and Congress numbers.
Yep, and they have not been wise as to what they have chosen to whine about. This President has been knee-high in garbage since the 2000 election. I am proud of him and how had has held up in the direst of circumstances. He has fought a global war on terror, fought an outrageous war with media, fought innuendo and speculation from the Democrats, fought a war with nature, and now he is fighting against his "base." The way his base is complaining you would think that our borders were closed on January 19, 2001 and opened on January 20, 2001. This has been an on-going problem for decades and only NOW is it an issue. Why, maybe because of terrorism. How many of the 9/11 terrorists came into this country via Mexico?
