Canada's greenhouse gas emissions far above target
Wed May 10, 3:07 PM ET
Canada's emissions of greenhouse gases are now 35 percent above the level it promised to reach under the Kyoto climate change accord and the country would have to ground every train, plane and car to meet its target, Environment Minister Rona Ambrose said on Wednesday.
Ambrose, a member of the new Conservative government, says Canada has no chance of meeting a Kyoto commitment to cut emissions to 6 percent below 1990 levels by 2008-12. The target was agreed by the previous Liberal government.
"Later this week we will release Canada's greenhouse gas inventory and it will show that Canada's (level of emissions) is now 35 percent higher than the Kyoto targets that the Liberals set," she told Parliament.
"To put that into perspective ... that would mean that today we would have to take every train, plane and automobile off the streets of Canada. That is not realistic."
The most recent data showed Canada's emissions were running 24.4 percent above 1990 levels. These will rise as oil sands are further developed in the energy-rich western province of Alberta -- which is also the main political base of the Conservative government.
Gotta love how Reuters end the piece with a bit that's irrelavent to the story yet attempts to hook the problem, now and in the future, on the new conservative government.

at least they have a target.
They haven't dumped Kyoto yet?
It is coming from all that pot smoke.
There's a part of me that would love to see this. Imagine how silly Canada would look when they've become the largest supplier of oil to the U.S. (they surpassed Saudi Arabia a few years ago) and can't even use most of the oil they extract.
..and where would the United States be if Global Warmhead Gore was elected in 2000?
Doogle
LOL. I guess they better start buying some greenhouse gas credits from Finland!
Canada ping.
Please FReepmail me to get on or off this ping list.
That is a bogus comment by Reuters.
Are they trying to cast aspersions? I would hope the liberal media would be beyond that.
...well you can always raise taxes and ban free speech (typical liberal answers)...

Maybe not that unrealistic. We've already taken almost every train and plane off the streets. Still working on buses, trucks, and automobiles.
Now if we could only stop breathing we may have a chance to make some progress.
Emissions will not go down until low-emission technologies are developed and introduced. The Asia-Pacific Partnership on Climate aims to do just that and I'll bet Canada soon joins.
