Harris Comments on Bense Announcement

Florida House Speaker Allan Bense announced today that he will not challenge U.S. Representative Katherine Harris in the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate.

According to an Associated Press account, Bense said, "I have been extremely honored and humbled by the strong support and encouragement I have received from my family, my friends, and from people across Florida who I admire greatly, however, I have decided not to run for the United States Senate."

"I respect Allan Bense's decision and appreciate his noble service to Florida. Allan has been a friend over the years, and I look forward to working with him in the future to win in November," said Harris in a statement Wednesday.

"Our campaign is focused on defeating liberal Bill Nelson. My candidacy is about being a fighter and a strong independent advocate for Florida. People are tired of politics as usual. They are tired of backroom beltway deals. They are tired of partisan politics. While I am a proud and loyal Republican, ultimately, when I cast a vote I always ask, is it the right vote for the people of my state and our nation - as opposed to a partisan game?"

Stanley Tate, Harris Campaign Finance Chair said, "People who know her, know Katherine Harris doesn't quit. She sticks to her guns and she will win in November with your support."

I sure hope it stops sometime, maybe after the filing deadline? No point in attacking the only republican in the race, no matter what perceptions are.

I sure hope we don't pull the "independent" crap.

I don't understand why they have a May filing deadline for a September primary though. That's a long time for something bad to happen to a candidate.

As I said ... If one didn't know better, one would believe incumbent Sen. Nelson is running a stunning re-election campaign using Republican operatives.

"Go play with someone else for a while. I'm tired of peple who think that some politcal party owes them something. I also don't waste time with people who start out calling people names and making threats."

No, I think you need to go play with someone else, perhaps yourself. And I'm tired of people who think that their politcal party owes them nothing, as you seem to.

As far as wasting time with people who call people names and make threats, your first post to me asked me to die, so don't get clever on us. I guess because someone debates with you and you don't get your way, you have to make up slights just to feel better.

The point: the Bushs and you are a bigger problem than Harris. You drive people from the party.

"If you feel you have no blessings then do whatever it is that people with no blessings do."

A clever twist of the word to tell me to go die. Come on, I've been Freeping since 1998.

Listen, pal, you assume WAY TOO MUCH. Perhaps you need a break from Freping but I wouldn't know.

I'm for shooting illegals as soon as they cross the border, but that might be considered a little extreme to some.

FR doesn't advocate violence. I'm surprised the Mods didn't pull your post.

Don't the people of Florida already know what a wild eyed liberal radical Nelson is? I thought he was the incumbent. Katherine Harris should focus on her own message.

Since Bense is not running, it's very interesting to see the silence here from the usual gang of the anti-K.H. keyboard commandos rooting for the "ass-naut" nelson as "their" candidate, yet most of them from out of State!??!
Nobody called them out to K.H. bashing tonight, or what's going on???

You have a good point. At least Harris has the guts to run.
Now, we must all support her.

Wake up. I've already maxed out on my FEC and I of course will vote for her, in a losing effort.

I'm certainly happy to hear that, I'm confident by sticking together it is possible to unseat the "ass-naut" into retirement!!!

I got an e-mail from RPOF and sent the following back to Carole:

Dear Carole:

I’m not sure you are looking forward to hear from me?
Thank you for the great job you are doing, EXCEPT for one major thing that RPOF has gravely neglected!
Your lack, including Governor Jeb Bush, of supporting Congresswoman Katharine Harris’ U.S. Senate campaign to unseat bill nelson is an outrage!!
My financial donations will go directly to Ms. Harris and NOT to RPOF until you have earned my trust in this regard.
The Governor’s attempt to have Mr. Bense oppose Ms. Harris thereby weakened her in the polls is NOT what you would expect from the Governor and the President after Ms. Harris’ steadfastness at the 2000 Florida election!!!
Hmmmm???
Shame on you!!!!

Subject: Making history in 2006

Dear P,
2006 is your chance to make history. Taking action means having a real say in the way Florida's government operates from day to day...and deciding who will best direct those operations.

No one said change is easy. But under Governor Jeb Bush and our Republican-led Legislature, Florida Republicans have taken real action...
• Republicans have transformed our education system, setting higher standards for students, schools, and teachers. Republicans stood up to the Democrats' assertions that "...things are just fine the way they are...." We knew this wasn't the best answer, so we embraced innovation and led our schools successfully into the 21st Century.
• Republicans have worked to energize Florida's economy and create new jobs. The result? Florida now leads the nation when it comes to job growth and our economy is one of the strongest in the country.

Republicans want to build on these reforms. We want to make sure that in 2006 the Democrats don't get the chance to reverse our hard-earned progress.

Soon it will be your turn to take action. Will you step up to the challenge?

Click here to update your contact info and we'll soon be in touch.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Carole Jean Jordan
Chairman
Republican Party of Florida
