The Republicans talk about cutting spending, but they increase it--a lot. They stand for making government smaller, but they keep making it bigger. They say they're concerned about our borders, but they're not securing them. And they seem to think we're slobs for worrying. Republicans used to be sober and tough about foreign policy, but now they're sort of romantic and full of emotionalism. They talk about cutting taxes, and they have, but the cuts are provisional, temporary. Beyond that, there's something creepy about increasing spending so much and not paying the price right away but instead rolling it over and on to our kids, and their kids.
So, the normal voter might think, maybe the Democrats. But Democrats are big spenders, Democrats are big government, Democrats will roll the cost onto our kids, and on foreign affairs they're--what? Cynical? Confused? In a constant daily cringe about how their own base will portray them? All of the above.
Where does such a voter go, and what does such a voter do? It is odd to live in the age of options, when everyone's exhausted by choice, and feel your options for securing political progress are so limited. One party has beliefs it doesn't act on. The other doesn't seem to have beliefs, only impulses.
What's a voter to do? Maybe stay home, have the neighbors over for some barbecue, and then answer the phone when a pollster calls asking for a few minutes to answer some questions. When they get to the part about whether America is on the right track or the wrong track, boy, the voter knows the answer.

If only we could post your "2007 They're Just Like Republicans Congressional Delegation" on billboards all over the country.
He tried, and got shot at from left and right at the same time.
The present situation is apparently unacceptable, unless someone actually proposes to change it, whereupon any change is unacceptable.
And if your idea of "forcing your reps to the table" is throwing them out, you will get a full-blown amnesty with immediate citizenship grants as a bonus in 2007. If that is what you want, then knock yourself out.
We haven't been hitting well lately, but we've been able to eke out some wins. This cannot be sustained, so what we have to do is lose on purpose so that we can really start hitting...
No, that doesn't make sense either.
Another one of those "I'm the smartest one in the room" jerks. The true rinos are those who suggest Republicans ought to lose elections.
Well, that was sobering.
Oh, and, uh, you ruined my day.
I congratulate you on this post for addressing the issues she presented and not even beginning to make any hint of ad hominem attacks.
One can tell by this mature and topic-oriented post that you are a thoughtful and fact oriented person capable of careful analysis and never prone to making baseless, personal attacks.
Right you are, Peggy! They're not enforcing the current laws, so why would we think they'd enforce any new ones. Plus, i don't like any of the ideas they're considering wrt Illegals anyway.
Well, as long as the border states keep electing Feinsteins and Boxers and even McCains, we can only conclude that the issue isn't all that important to them.
Peggy has lost her MoJo. Sad to see someone who had such a talent with words to come to this in a bid for attention (and gainful employment). Just another useful tool for the msm. If she truly believes Republicans will turn the country over to the worst set of democrats in our history, then she is further out of touch with reality than previously supposed.
The republican party is a complete disappointment, HOWEVER the democrats are disgraceful. Republicans may only rate a 2 but dems are way below zero. I don't really believe they can ever regain power with this bunch in charge.
God helps us if they do!!
BTW--when I speak of disappointment in republicans I mean the congress, unlike them, I remain completely loyal to this President Bush.
Nope, didn't think so.
I am in Texas....thank you very much...
He got shot at and gave up because of weakness....and apparently a need to be a centrist.
It is very difficult for a real Republican to defeat a *** incumbent *** RINO in a primary, so the only way to get a change is to vote for a Rat, and then give all out support to the true conservative candidate in the next primary (if the country survives long enough for there to be one).
Answer: Their alternative is worse.
Could we, as conservatives, be headed for the same fate (think: The movie Groundhog Day)?
Sorry to say, I think we need a sitting General/Admiral to be elected to the Presidency.
I SO sick of all those Godless, greedy, Ivy League lawyers running this country into the ground.
A bad bill is worse than no bill at all. The border problem is not a one step solution. We have to address the labor issue as well as the crossing issue. This is a winner if done right.
Pray for W and Our Freedom Fighters
You think that maybe, just maybe, the Bush apologists might wake up one day and friggin' realize that there is a serious problem in the GOP.
Naaah, just blame the critics. Just as Papa Bush's loss in 1992 was the fault of Ross Perot, not the fault of Bush breaking campaign promises.
My reaction to the truth in Peggy Noonan's letter was anger at the Republican Party for letting those of us that voted them in power, down. I know the Republican Party stands for much, much better than they are currently performing. I just hope they can pull a rabbit out of the hat by election time.
