Maybe our shoe wearing habit has eliminated the 'pressure' to HAVE a thumb there! No. It's an adaption to a life of upright walking on the ground rather than swinging through trees.
Our feet are much more efficient for getting around on land than are those of the great apes, which spend a lot more time in trees.
