Hard Core Republicans Are Fleeing President
The Washington Post ^ | May 11, 2006 | JIm VandeHei and Peter Baker

Disaffection over spending and immigration have caused conservatives to take flight from President Bush and the Republican Congress at a rapid pace in recent weeks, sending Bush's approval ratings to record lows and presenting a new threat to the GOP's 12-year reign on Capitol Hill, according to White House officials, lawmakers and new polling data.

Bush and Congress have suffered a decline in support from almost every part of the conservative coalition over the past year, a trend that has accelerated with alarming implications for Bush's governing strategy.

The Gallup polling organization recorded a 13-percentage-point drop in Republican support for Bush in the past couple weeks. These usually reliable voters are telling pollsters and lawmakers they are fed up with what they see as out-of-control spending by Washington and an abandonment of core conservative principles more generally.

There are also significant pockets of conservatives turning on Bush and Congress over the their failure to tighten immigration laws, restrict gay marriage and to put an end to the Iraq war and the rash of political scandals, according to lawmakers and pollsters.

Bush won two presidential elections by pursuing a political and governing model that was predicated on winning and sustaining the loyal backing of social, economic and foreign policy conservatives. The strategy was based on the belief that conservatives, who are often more politically active than the general public, could be inspired to vote in larger numbers and would serve as a reliable foundation for his presidency. The theory, as explained by Bush strategists, is that the president would enjoy a floor below which his support would never fall.

It is now apparent that this floor has weakened dramatically and collapsed in places.

You lost me with the 200 miles to the next hospital. I know some of the ERs have had to close but I am walking distance to two of the largest Hospitals and medical centers in the State here in San Diego. Scrips Mercy Hospital and Medical center and UCSD Hospital and medical center.

The President proposed a guest worker bill before the 2004 Elections

He touched on it during the 2000 Campaign. At the time I dont think he was connecting it as a way to secure the US/MEX border or a way to cut down on illegals. I dont remember the border and illegals being as much of an issue back then but he did touch on the guestworker program back then. At the time it was presented as such: If a company cannot find American workers for a particular position and they can prove they offered the position to Americans first, then they could advertise internationally in "help wanted" and a person in another country would be able to apply for the job and get the visa to work here for a period of time. Then they would have to return home and reapply in order to come back to the usa under the same program.

So much had happened since the 2000 campaign from the Election 2000 fiasco, to the Clinton Recession, 911 (which sparked the unsecure border debate and illegals).

I remember this very well only because it was a program that I supported as it was presented in 2000. I do NOT support the Guestworker program for those here already illegally nor do I support it for just the people of Mexico.

Just imagine the media storm there would be if we tried to throw out all of the illegals (IE the media showing pictures of ICE agents rounding up women and children, played thousands of times over)? It would be political suicide for anyone to try it, unfortunatly.

If we are to implement kicking out illegals, we must make sure that the media stays away.

At first I thought this was going to be a interesting thread with all the views but then I saw it was a WP article.

What a bummer.

It's no surprise that Minutemen members would be cowboys, but it ought to concern you that the armed leader of the group has a troubling pattern of flying off the handle...

...as related by the Southern Poverty Law Center, who coincidentally are also in favor of amnesty for illegals. What a coincidence!

I see you're once again trying to build up the Republican ranks for your beloved President with your loving, decent attitude and kind words.

I probably know more FReepers on a face-to-face, personal, basis than 99% of the people here.

So do I, including the owner of this forum.

They're not "DU trolls". They're down to earth, wonderful, conservative, patriotic Americans.

As are my FRiends. Get a clue, EV, the trolls are here to disrupt and they do not attend FR events. Like DUh.

And they're sick of the ugliness against conservatives that's been coming from the folks you run with here...an ugliness that is finding new lows every day now.

We sure are --- we're damn sick of your arrogant attitude and your bashing of almost every elected Republican.

There are those here who do not agree with our President on the immigration issue and are doing exactly that.

Yes, I know........but they/you are being drowned out by the hysterical, angry, disruptors who have no intention of working together with a 'bushbot' to actually have some effect on things.

They have no intention of writing reasonable letters, or making reasonable phone calls, or anything else that will actually have some real effect on our Congress.

They WANT the problems to remain.............and they are getting away with dividing us right now, and shoving this once strong forum down into the sewer.

What's the matter, have your Southern Poverty Law Center communist talking points worn thin?

Hell EV I am just getting started. Simcox has a paper trail a mile long. I find it odd that the most "holier than thou" poster on FR would support a man accused by his 13 year old daughter of attempted rape

He's killing us, here and in Iraq.

I respectfully disagree on both your points. The illegal foreign nationals issue is critical but is our President killing us?

Well, I'm still breathing, my retirement plan is up significantly in value, my income is up, my job security is up.

My Federal income tax is lower, a 5-4 decision on the Supreme Court just went against Ginsberg, Breyer, Souter and Kennedy.

The Iraq campaign is becoming more successful day by day. We are killing Jihadists, they are not killing me or my family and bluntly while President Bush is in office there will not be an attack on our nation. The cowardly Jihadists are scared of him.

I'm with OhioWfan and others on this. Lets start talking sense and stop the hyperbole, please. Lets work together for a solution instead of tossing unfounded rhetoric around.

Oh, yes... Nappy is a piece of work and (according to Zogby) 30 points ahead of Goldwater for November.

Rasmussen, not quite as high as Zog sauce, shows Napolitano up by 19%

I'm afraid our state is taking a left turn politically... not sure if it's the immigrants from the South or the West.

However, Rasmussen has Senator Kyl AZ, R up by 16%.

You were always in the top ten worst scumbags on FR, but you're vying for first place in the last twenty four hours.

Your post, not unusually, is factually challenged.

By whom? You?

Then challenge it.

Are you a Republican, or are you still in the bleachers over Terri Schiavo?

This stomping-out-of-the-room routine is getting old, Tom. You pouters are the daughters I never had.

You don't understand, the number of apprehended or deported is meaningless without a secured border. Those deported are back within hours or days. It is a joke, just not a very funny one. The number that should worry everyone is the number of illegals that are not apprehended.

for crying out loud - this cra*pola about "punishing" the pubs by voting them out this year so's they'll shape up for the vote in 08 - What part of the rats plans don't you get?

They have stated one of their primary goals is to eliminate the electoral college. (If not for the electoral college, we would have had a Pres. GORE for the past 6 years.) Without it, there will never be another republican president.

Remember what the map with the red states looks like - the fly over country?

Those are the voters whose votes will no longer count if the electoral college is sabotaged. The socialist will have control and we will NOT get it back>

I don't know about you, but I do not choose to have any part in turning this great country over to socialism...
