Disaffection over spending and immigration have caused conservatives to take flight from President Bush and the Republican Congress at a rapid pace in recent weeks, sending Bush's approval ratings to record lows and presenting a new threat to the GOP's 12-year reign on Capitol Hill, according to White House officials, lawmakers and new polling data.
Bush and Congress have suffered a decline in support from almost every part of the conservative coalition over the past year, a trend that has accelerated with alarming implications for Bush's governing strategy.
The Gallup polling organization recorded a 13-percentage-point drop in Republican support for Bush in the past couple weeks. These usually reliable voters are telling pollsters and lawmakers they are fed up with what they see as out-of-control spending by Washington and an abandonment of core conservative principles more generally.
There are also significant pockets of conservatives turning on Bush and Congress over the their failure to tighten immigration laws, restrict gay marriage and to put an end to the Iraq war and the rash of political scandals, according to lawmakers and pollsters.
Bush won two presidential elections by pursuing a political and governing model that was predicated on winning and sustaining the loyal backing of social, economic and foreign policy conservatives. The strategy was based on the belief that conservatives, who are often more politically active than the general public, could be inspired to vote in larger numbers and would serve as a reliable foundation for his presidency. The theory, as explained by Bush strategists, is that the president would enjoy a floor below which his support would never fall.
It is now apparent that this floor has weakened dramatically and collapsed in places.

Missed your post. Yes, he let me down.
Exactly. I think Frist has a better chance of working this along with Sessions, Kyl, etc.
If it doesn't pass with some of the dems getting on board, there will be at least a record of where all stands and for the record, the hijackers will have lost an issue with more republicans for the fence.
I have that suspicion too - Rove gets released form other duties so's he can go back to doing what he does best...and bam! We get Tony Snow, the leadership change for CIA (I think there are some very nervous agents now) etc - I think the next few months are going to be interesting. (Now if only Karen Hughes would come back :o))
I could make an even better case that the joint is "infiltrated" by liberals masquerading as hardcore Bush supporters, 'Bushbots', if you will; who are only here for one reason: to create hatred and division in the GOP, and political damage for the President, by constantly attacking good conservative folks who are only standing for their principles.
It's worse now than ever. Shoot, last night they were using slime from the communists at the "Southern Poverty Law Center" to slime Chris Simcox.
There are lots of people like me, who have worked diligently in the Republican trenches for the last decade, who can hardly post here anymore without being viciously attacked.
I think you have blinders on, friend.
At this point they are driving us away in droves...............those of us who agree with them, but can't tolerate their disrespect for our Commander in Chief, and honorable President.
The DU trolls are ruling the roost on this issue. It's time to take it BACK from them.
Are you saying that about 60% of the site according to the last poll are "DU trolls"?
Frankly, that makes a whole lot more sense than these other "sleeper" conspiracy theories that are being bandied about.
I could not agree more!
Because of the way the republicans in congress, have acted these last 5 years, it is going to be hard to give them the undieing loyalty they would have earned, had they just had a spine!
That being said, some here, including myself, are going to make them regret the decisions they made for cozying up to the dems for votes.
There is still a little time for them to rectify some of the damage they have caused, but I wont hold my breath.
Post #88. What you & Southack said.
BTTT
You can't slime slime.
You must be clean as a whistle, then.
"EV "said" he turned down ROVE'S offer"
Why troll the place as a Bush supporter? That doesn't make sense at any level.
Look at the first twenty or thirty posts of EVERY thread. It is overrun by Bush haters.
The blinders are on YOU, my friend. The Dems want victory in November, and they are using this issue and the emotion of it, both the media, and the trolls here........to split us apart.
Sinkspur, you may put me on your list.
There's THE list, and the other list.
Anybody who wants on THE list doesn't get on THE list.
So you qualify for the other list.
THE list is for people who actively support Democrats.
The other list is for lazy dumbasses who vote 3rd party or don't vote so they can teach the GOP a lesson.
I'm afraid you're going to be on the other list for a very long time.
I suspect she will just like the last election. And in the interest of full disclosure I didn't vote for Bush in 2000 but I did in 2004 for two reasons: Judges and the War on Teror.
It's been noted publically that Rove is participating in the Maryland Senate campaign with Michael Steele and that Steele has not distanced himself from Bush is telling. Indeed, Hillary's embrace of Bush supports the notion that if a candidate wants to win they have to express some proximity to the President.
How this fits in to the immigration debate is questionable but there it is.
It makes no sense at all, on any level of rational thought.
I'm ready. Tell you what. You get Jorge Bush to change his tune: support a fence, support ending social services for illegals, stop supporting a guest worker program, and...
I will stop bashing him for betraying me.
BTW, the conservative base is not fractured because some of us have become "Bush Bashers". It has been fractured by bush himself. The logic is simple, he is the only one with the power to have done it.
He's on the right track...........he just needs a little push from us. :)
Gotta get to bed. Good night! Carry on...........and thanks again!
You're the Kettle and the Pot.
