Hard Core Republicans Are Fleeing President
The Washington Post ^ | May 11, 2006 | JIm VandeHei and Peter Baker

Posted on 05/10/2006 7:15:13 PM PDT by Dems_R_Losers

Disaffection over spending and immigration have caused conservatives to take flight from President Bush and the Republican Congress at a rapid pace in recent weeks, sending Bush's approval ratings to record lows and presenting a new threat to the GOP's 12-year reign on Capitol Hill, according to White House officials, lawmakers and new polling data.

Bush and Congress have suffered a decline in support from almost every part of the conservative coalition over the past year, a trend that has accelerated with alarming implications for Bush's governing strategy.

The Gallup polling organization recorded a 13-percentage-point drop in Republican support for Bush in the past couple weeks. These usually reliable voters are telling pollsters and lawmakers they are fed up with what they see as out-of-control spending by Washington and an abandonment of core conservative principles more generally.

There are also significant pockets of conservatives turning on Bush and Congress over the their failure to tighten immigration laws, restrict gay marriage and to put an end to the Iraq war and the rash of political scandals, according to lawmakers and pollsters.

Bush won two presidential elections by pursuing a political and governing model that was predicated on winning and sustaining the loyal backing of social, economic and foreign policy conservatives. The strategy was based on the belief that conservatives, who are often more politically active than the general public, could be inspired to vote in larger numbers and would serve as a reliable foundation for his presidency. The theory, as explained by Bush strategists, is that the president would enjoy a floor below which his support would never fall.

It is now apparent that this floor has weakened dramatically and collapsed in places.

Cute..........but irrelevant. Bush's position on illegal immigration is NOT leftist.

Go to the White House website and read it.

Irrelevant = White House website drivel.

Relevant = What President Bush would sign.

Bush signed the McCain-Feingold CFR bill didn't he? Though it differed from the position then on the White House website. McCain-Feingold is now the highly relevant law of the land.

Dispute this: Bush would have signed McCain-Kennedy, and McCain-Kennedy was a leftist bill. Ergo, Bush's position on immigration is leftist.

Boy, if you FIND a basically pro-Bush site where issues and disagreements with him can be rationally discussed, let me know.

There ARE thousands on this forum who have pulled away because of the irrational DU style hatred for our moral and honorable President and Commander in Chief.

These posseurs may well have brought this great forum to the brink of death. I'm sure DU'ers are cheering as the rational FReepers stand on the sidelines waiting for reason to return. Let's pray that it does.

Well it might have been a great post, if I had ever called for the impeachment of President Bush; which I have not. I am also not prone to hysterics. Putting words in someone's mouth never makes for a good post.

Peach made a snide comment about border supporters being on this thread, when immigration was clearly part of the article being discussed. I do not post immigration issues on threads not related. I have not done any of the things Peach is going on about- so if irrelevance makes a good post then there you have it.

I have the same conservative principles I did 20 years ago as do many others on this forum. The president abandoned us on many counts.

Yeah, really awful. So let's keep voting for people who are just like them except for the (R) after their names. Equally brilliant.

Get some rest and remember..JR is with us.

"Recognize the enemy for what he is and do not allow them to use divisive issues to destroy our conservative movement. We are winning. We must not be sidetracked by an issue that will be solved in due time as we elect more conservative members to our government and continue replacing liberal activist judges with constitutionalists."Posted on 05/11/2006 12:52:43 AM PDT by Jim Robinson

I'll take this as your way of graciously conceding my point about Bush's position on immigration being leftist. Rest up, and we'll look forward to your return on the next go round!

Anyone know of a forum where basically pro Bush people can discuss issues without getting dragged into anti Bush immigration rants?

IheartBush.com?

or

Ihavenoprinciples.org?

I guess I don't understand why, if you "don't agree with amnesty", you are willing to give in or go along with it instead of fighting to prevent it?

Illegal immigration is not a "fighting" issue for me. I've had too much experience with illegals who worked their butts off after I couldn't get legal workers to do a job right. I think that's why lots of Americans are just not that upset with allowing illegals to remain in America after we close the borders.

They've seen the work they do and their work ethic and admire it.

Aw, I'm just funnin'. Certainly some other Loyal Bush Supporter can pick up OhioWfan's fallen standard, whilst OhioWfan gets much needed R&R.

"Hard Core Republicans Are Fleeing President"

Well, if they're fleeing, they're obviously not "hard core Republicans." Probably never were. Hard core Republicans do not cut and run.

The ad he started running to rebut Pederson must be helping, I heard it was on 11 points a week or two ago. I shudder to think he could lose.

I haven't seen any Goldwater ads or Napolitano ads; hopefully she will sink in the polls once they both start getting serious and we have a few debates where all her vetos are brought forward.
