Hard Core Republicans Are Fleeing President
The Washington Post ^ | May 11, 2006 | JIm VandeHei and Peter Baker

Disaffection over spending and immigration have caused conservatives to take flight from President Bush and the Republican Congress at a rapid pace in recent weeks, sending Bush's approval ratings to record lows and presenting a new threat to the GOP's 12-year reign on Capitol Hill, according to White House officials, lawmakers and new polling data.

Bush and Congress have suffered a decline in support from almost every part of the conservative coalition over the past year, a trend that has accelerated with alarming implications for Bush's governing strategy.

The Gallup polling organization recorded a 13-percentage-point drop in Republican support for Bush in the past couple weeks. These usually reliable voters are telling pollsters and lawmakers they are fed up with what they see as out-of-control spending by Washington and an abandonment of core conservative principles more generally.

There are also significant pockets of conservatives turning on Bush and Congress over the their failure to tighten immigration laws, restrict gay marriage and to put an end to the Iraq war and the rash of political scandals, according to lawmakers and pollsters.

Bush won two presidential elections by pursuing a political and governing model that was predicated on winning and sustaining the loyal backing of social, economic and foreign policy conservatives. The strategy was based on the belief that conservatives, who are often more politically active than the general public, could be inspired to vote in larger numbers and would serve as a reliable foundation for his presidency. The theory, as explained by Bush strategists, is that the president would enjoy a floor below which his support would never fall.

It is now apparent that this floor has weakened dramatically and collapsed in places.

It's a little backwards, Bush and the congress fled the base.

So let's not be throwing around phony accusations, OK?

Agreed and that SHOULD go for everyone.

Thank you for giving your honest opinion.

I guess I don't understand why, if you "don't agree with amnesty", you are willing to give in or go along with it instead of fighting to prevent it? That's why I asked about whether or not you were just going along because of some loyalty to Bush (who says it isn't amnesty, but it is amnesty, and insults my intelligence in saying so). Why not find and support other Republicans who are also against it?

Perhaps there is no way to 'deport' 12 million illegals (probably much higher), but if we do what we should have been doing all along......the border is secured, laws are enforced, jobs and benefits (housing, cash, food stamps, medicaid) dry up and they risk arrest for being here illegally.......what choice will they have but to go home? They'll deport themselves. Or are you afraid if Bush/Congress don't meet their demands, they will start their Revolucion?

With an election hanging over their heads, shouldn't a certainty be effectively securing our borders and enforcing our immigration laws?

I guess I'm a fighter and I just don't get giving in so easily for ANY reason.

"I scrolled down the rest of the thread, and I still saw no productive discussion about what can be DONE about this."

I tried that "meaningful discussion" thing a few days back and got bombarded from all sides. We can't have any of that now can we! /s

That's why I sidelined myself on this thread and willingly watched you guys try your luck. I would love to see a purging of some malcontents but that's not for me to determine. There are so many people that just want to complain, complain, complain but offer no real plan. It's starting to look like a dem forum here.

I'm pooped trying to reason with them. I'll be back in the thick of it with guns blazing in a few days I'm sure. Good luck on your mission if you choose to continue. LOL

I'll be cheering you on.

I can't even argue with that. Your conclusions don't make any sense...........and you never addressed the truly leftist position on the issue, and how Bush's position is NOT the same.

Please try again. The 'leftist' position on illegal immigration isn't even close to Bush's.

And blaming HIM for hurting our troops in Iraq is just bizarre. There's nothing to even grab onto and defend. It's a bizarre, baseless accusation.

Give me a candidate whose platform is border security. THE ENTIRE PLATFORM is BORDER SECURITY! Whomever it is will win on their first try.

I don't think there could be a more perfectly absurd summation -- dare I say position paper! -- of all the boo-birds on this interminable thread.

Personal attacks are unacceptable and if you consider the thread to be interminable, there are plenty of others.

Earthdweller, I am formulating a thread where people like you, who have been pushed out by the nasties, can enter into a civil discussion, and we can get down to the problem and try to make some progress, and really agitate to get our hapless leaders to DO something.

We have enough people here, that if we get SERIOUS about it, and don't just whine, we can get something done.

I feel it in my bones! LOL!

Cute..........but irrelevant.

Bush's position on illegal immigration is NOT leftist.

Go to the White House website and read it.

What you said in that statement WAS absurd. I used the word 'bizarre' but the concept is the same.

Perhaps you didn't mean what you actually typed. I'm willing to let you try again to say what you meant, because blaming President Bush for hurting our troops is both absurd and bizarre.

While Carter made a colossal mess of the economy even he could not keep the country down

So, We can count on your vote for whomever the Democrats put up? We all know what a great job they've done on the Border and with immigration. Yes indeedy, it'll be a beautiful thing to behold.

It took a hell of a lot of economic pain to bring Reagan's economic vision to the fore. This President, faced with an incredible propaganda campaign on top of the other influences, manages to get a stagnating economy going again. But, no, we find something new to carp about.

Think very carefully about 1996, take a look at the Conservative victories then. Think carefully about appointments to the federal bench. Give some of your finely crafted visions to the effects of an immediate reversal of the manifold positive accomplishments of this Presidency .

Lovely, isn't it?

"It's starting to look like a dem forum here."

Amen. I mostly come to FR to enjoy the company of like-minded people who understand the importance of keeping the Democrat party out of power. Lately, all I find here is foolish anti-Bush rants. I can think of a several things I'd do differently if I was President, but I'm not, and by and large, I am very happy with W - I'm glad he's my President.

Anyone know of a forum where basically pro Bush people can discuss issues without getting dragged into anti Bush immigration rants?
