Hard Core Republicans Are Fleeing President
The Washington Post ^ | May 11, 2006 | JIm VandeHei and Peter Baker

Posted on 05/10/2006 7:15:13 PM PDT by Dems_R_Losers

Disaffection over spending and immigration have caused conservatives to take flight from President Bush and the Republican Congress at a rapid pace in recent weeks, sending Bush's approval ratings to record lows and presenting a new threat to the GOP's 12-year reign on Capitol Hill, according to White House officials, lawmakers and new polling data.

Bush and Congress have suffered a decline in support from almost every part of the conservative coalition over the past year, a trend that has accelerated with alarming implications for Bush's governing strategy.

The Gallup polling organization recorded a 13-percentage-point drop in Republican support for Bush in the past couple weeks. These usually reliable voters are telling pollsters and lawmakers they are fed up with what they see as out-of-control spending by Washington and an abandonment of core conservative principles more generally.

There are also significant pockets of conservatives turning on Bush and Congress over the their failure to tighten immigration laws, restrict gay marriage and to put an end to the Iraq war and the rash of political scandals, according to lawmakers and pollsters.

Bush won two presidential elections by pursuing a political and governing model that was predicated on winning and sustaining the loyal backing of social, economic and foreign policy conservatives. The strategy was based on the belief that conservatives, who are often more politically active than the general public, could be inspired to vote in larger numbers and would serve as a reliable foundation for his presidency. The theory, as explained by Bush strategists, is that the president would enjoy a floor below which his support would never fall.

It is now apparent that this floor has weakened dramatically and collapsed in places.

Build a WALL or bye bye...

Ultimatums like this, based on a single part of a single issue (not even the entire issue, but just the wall), indicate either tremendous immaturity, or simple-mindedness........the complete inability to discern, and make rational decisions.

Fortunately the vast majority of those on this forum who say irrational things such as this, most likely never were Republicans in the first place. There are a whole lot of posers around here, chiming in because they've hated the GOP all along.

But the 'hardcore' pretenders on this forum lap up whatever the leftist media prints about GOP troubles, don't they?

And they wonder why we're suspicious of them.....

Bush's position is NOT 'leftist.'

It is not strong enough......it may be completely wrong...... but the leftist position, as evidenced by the Dem propaganda during the rallies is to show maps of the southwestern US as being part of Mexico, to advocate complete health benefits and citizenship to all illegals, and to have a completely open border, because there IS no US Sovereignty. because America is a bad place filled with imperialist bad people.

It is REALLY important to be accurate here, Kimberly. Disagreeing with the President is one thing. Completely mischaracterizing his position on the border is just plain wrong, and it hurts the real discussion of the issue.

Have you ever been a political activist, tru? Have you ever actually WORKED for a conservative cause, or a strong conservative candidate? Have you agitated for change?

Yes I have and will do so in the future.

And girly man? What, you just LOVE squishy moderates as long as their is an R next to their name? I mean quoting a Republican governor that might as well be a dem with the way he is "leading?'

"I consider myself a relatively moderate conservative ( atheist, could not care less about Gay's , don,t care much about abortion ) My real " litmus test issue " being the war, immigration and gun control All of which are somewhat related anyway But I am very disappointed by the GOP lackluster performance at this stage"

Appreciate the honesty, but res ipsa .... you have reduced yourself to a mere retail consumer of politics, which is exactly what the mandarin DUmmies minions (Dean, Schuster, Emanuel, et al) have planned for and marketed to since 2004.

There are those who care very much about Life, Faith, and the inherent rottenness of DUmmie social engineering -- those things are most certainly related to defeating the DUmmies again and again and again.

If you agree with his position, I'd like to know why? Or are you just going along because it's what Bush says and you support him no matter what.

I don't agree with amnesty. But, in my view, even if the borders are firmly secured (and they should be), 12 million illegals are not going to be deported, at once or over time, back to Mexico.

So what do you do with them? As far as I am concerned, some kind of guest worker program or citizenship or something is an absolute requirement.

The best thing to do for the GOP would be to secure the borders this year, then debate this next year.

But, I can tell you, without an election hanging over their heads, a citizenship program will be a certainty from Congress.

Oh, and I am 100% opposed to turning employers and business owners into ICE agents. If somebody is in this country, I ought to be able to hire them, based on MY criteria. Requiring me, under threat of prison, to make certain that his SS number matches up with the latest database that may or may not be accurate will make me think twice about hiring any Hispanic-looking person, legal or illegal.

Bottom line: those of you who are absolutely opposed to making some provision for illegals currently in the country, and their families, are unrealistic and are inevitably going to be disappointed.

Simply building a wall will not work unless the government (Aggressively) enforces our laws and holds illegal immigrants in jail for a few years prior to releasing them back to Mexico (or where ever).

I disagree. As for accuracy, it's pretty clear cut to me. IMO, on the right are those who are FOR the enforcement of our laws, FOR an effectively secured border and AGAINST earned amnesty for illegal aliens. On the left are everyone else.

I am truly disappointed that Bush has let me down on this. Very disappointed. But, I will continue to try and find other Republicans on the right side of this issue, like Tancredo, who I CAN support. But if we loose the majority, if our troops in Iraq are forced to surrender, if dems win control and we stop fighting the war on terror, all because of Bush, I don't think I will ever forgive him.

Is that a derrogatory reference to those like me who disagree?

I don't think there could be a more perfectly absurd summation -- dare I say position paper! -- of all the boo-birds on this interminable thread.

Bush's position is NOT 'leftist.'

Bush was eager to sign the The Secure America and Orderly Immigration Act (S. 1033) introduced by Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Edward Kennedy (D-MA)

Do you see any leftists in this picture?

I'm pretty sure the Dems will give them a ride back home and not just leave them as we did the POWS... now that was a knife in the back. Who do you think organized and encouraged that knife in the back?

This country is too large and it's economic engine to vast for 4--or even 8--years of inept Democrat governence to destroy it.

You must not be old enough to recall the economic genius of the Carter Adminstration.

Well, if you answered yes to the first, then the 'No' to the girly man was automatic, tru. I was asking the question, not accusing.

btw, I hate Arnold's politics, but his 'girly man' for Dems and applicable for the squawking, griping, whining, pseudo-libs on this forum was perfect.

You obviously aren't one of them, if you are what you say you are (one never knows around here, you know).

But let's get one FACT clear.

I am a conservative activist......there's nothing squishy or moderate about me. I am involved at the grassroots, organization level to get Ken Blackwell elected as Ohio's governor, AGAINST the liberal Republican choice in the primary. Blackwell is the ANTI-Taft.......and I agree with 100% of his positions, and will be working my tail off to get him elected, so that we can get this state straightened out.

So let's not be throwing around phony accusations, OK?
