Hard Core Republicans Are Fleeing President
The Washington Post ^ | May 11, 2006 | JIm VandeHei and Peter Baker

Disaffection over spending and immigration have caused conservatives to take flight from President Bush and the Republican Congress at a rapid pace in recent weeks, sending Bush's approval ratings to record lows and presenting a new threat to the GOP's 12-year reign on Capitol Hill, according to White House officials, lawmakers and new polling data.

Bush and Congress have suffered a decline in support from almost every part of the conservative coalition over the past year, a trend that has accelerated with alarming implications for Bush's governing strategy.

The Gallup polling organization recorded a 13-percentage-point drop in Republican support for Bush in the past couple weeks. These usually reliable voters are telling pollsters and lawmakers they are fed up with what they see as out-of-control spending by Washington and an abandonment of core conservative principles more generally.

There are also significant pockets of conservatives turning on Bush and Congress over the their failure to tighten immigration laws, restrict gay marriage and to put an end to the Iraq war and the rash of political scandals, according to lawmakers and pollsters.

Bush won two presidential elections by pursuing a political and governing model that was predicated on winning and sustaining the loyal backing of social, economic and foreign policy conservatives. The strategy was based on the belief that conservatives, who are often more politically active than the general public, could be inspired to vote in larger numbers and would serve as a reliable foundation for his presidency. The theory, as explained by Bush strategists, is that the president would enjoy a floor below which his support would never fall.

It is now apparent that this floor has weakened dramatically and collapsed in places.

"put an end to the Iraq war Who besides liberals is asking for this?" "I for one think it's gone on way too long. And I'm a conservative and a Vet."

Well, WWII went on too long, but that doesnt mean we should have quit after Midway or Anzio ...

The Iraq war is an insurgency that will wind down as we grind down the terrorist cells. The good news is that for Al Qaeda, their own internal documents reveal that they consider themselves losing. They are weaker month by month and the Iraqi forces are stronger. Soon enough Iraq will be able to defend itself and our troops will be able to get out of harm's way.

I guess you think it's appropriate for someone to jump onto a thread about a child who's probably going to die one of the most hideous deaths you can imagine and start ranting about immigration. Do you fart in church and laugh about it, too?

in fact there already are walls along long sections of our borders....

NPR had a story on this morning that I found hilarious. To show that the stories about hospitals going broke were all wrong, they featured a hospital on the Arizona border that had cash coming in to cover the cost of the illegals...from the one billion allocated to the border hospitals a couple of years ago. Ironically, business was down for the hospital because of a new border fence. But anyway, the moral of the story was that all was well because the federal taxpayers would pay to cover treating the illegals.

But, but, but,,,,, the Bush-bashers say he hasn't done anything!

"Purge the party of RINOs in the primaries and send hard-core conservatives to Washington. It's that simple.

I agree. Send a couple of RINOs packin in the primaries and watch the rest of them get in line. It is time.

I think you broken-glass Republicans should put your noodles to together and figure out a better reason to vote Republican than "Democrats are worse". They certainly are, but that particular tactic only works on people who resist doing any of their own thinking (a.k.a. liberals).

No. If you read the link, you would see that the capture and release policy has been stopped.

So what do we have here?

We have a president who has given us tax cuts, banned partial birth abortion, organized a war in two countries and is doing more about illegal immigration than any other president in your lifetime or mine.

And ya'll are STILL complaining.
