If you have been reading the All-Star pages of AMW.COM carefully you know we said the 2006 AMW All-Star would be revealed Saturday, May 13. But after months of nominations and voting, when the results were tallied we just couldn't wait. Thousands of votes were cast over the last two weeks for each finalist.
The competition was tough -- each finalist an All-Star in a unique way. There was much debate here at AMW over who the public would cast the most votes for. But in the end the 2006 AMW All-Star is David Shoar, Sheriff of St. John's County, Fla. Voters were no doubt touched by Sheriff Shoar's accomplishments over a 25-year-career in law enforcement, as well as his selfless pledge to donate the entire $10,000 grand prize to one of his deputies who recently suffered a stroke and needs the money for medical expenses. When we talked to Sheriff Shoar this morning, he was humbled to be able to represent first responders across the nation -- typical of a man who has spent the last two decades looking out for others.

Thanks again to all of you who made this possible !!
Congradulations to Sheriff Shoar !!
I personally voted for Jim Ryno, but hey all the guys up there are winners in my book.
Congratulations to our Sheriff!
10-4

Florida Sheriff Awarded At NASCAR All-Star Race
5/26/2006
John Walsh and Nextel executive Leon Frazier presented Sheriff Shoar as the AMW All-Star in front of thousands of NASCAR fans in Charlotte, N.C. on May 20, 2006.
View LargerJust a few weeks ago, St, Augustine, Fla. Sheriff David Shoar was wondering if he'd be able to fulfill a promise he'd made to his community earlier this spring.
Sheriff Shoar became a finalist during the sixth week of the eight-week 2006 AMW All-Star Award competition, and he said he planned to give the $10,000 in prize money to a deputy in his department who had some hard times.
Deputy Steve Bailey suffered a major stroke last November and then in an unbelievable stroke of bad luck, survived a devastating house fire on Easter Sunday.
Fast forward a few weeks later and Sheriff Shoar is in Charlotte, N.C. among thousands of NASCAR fans -- and he's holding a giant check for $10,000.
AMW viewers showed overwhelming support and chose Sheriff Shoar as the 2006 AMW All-Star, and he couldn't have been happier for himself, and for Steve Bailey and his family.
More Attention, More Support
Sheriff Shoar has more than 25 years of law enforcement experience under his belt.
View LargerNow that's it's all official, David is glad to be able to help Steve and his family get back on their feet. But he's not the only one in their Florida community who wants to help out.
When word got out about Sheriff's Shoar's big win, three other good Samaritans came forward and matched the $10,000 All-Star prize.
That means that Deputy Bailey and his family now have $40,000 to begin their new life.
"It's been a great opportunity to give back to our community, " David told John Walsh in Charlotte. "It's a great feel-good story."
