Canadian Court Rejects Petition Recognizing Jerusalem

(IsraelNN.com) A Canadian federal court in Winnipeg yesterday rejected the petition of B'nai Brith and a Toronto teen to have the Canadian government recognize Jerusalem as being in Israel for the purposes of its passports. Canadian citizens born in the Israeli capital are currently issued passports listing either "Israel," without a city name, or "Jerusalem," without a country name. Shortly after the young man, Eliyahu Veffer, and B'nai Brith filed their petition, the state initiated a "recall" of Canadian passports that had been issued, in what officials called an "administrative error," listing Jerusalem as being in Israel.

"My religion teaches me that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel," Veffer said in his affidavit. "This is an integral part of my religious belief."

Jerusalem isn't officially recognized as part of Israel under Canadian foreign policy. Lawyers for the federal government argued in court that it has been Canada's policy for over 20 years not to list "Jerusalem, Israel" in Canadian passports.

this is the same Canada that doesn't acknowledge taiwan, they believe in one China.
Hopefully this new administration in canada will rectify the situation soon. Canada has been playing flunky to the mid east dictators for too long. Check out the American thinker, there is an article in there today discussing this very issue.

Dude, the capital of the nation of Israel is not Jerusalem. The seat of power is Tel Aviv (allthough I think that Jerusalem should be the capital, but I think that some random treaty made sure it wasn't)

Pandering to ROP alert. Unfortuantely US policy is the exact same. Too bad Bush refuses to change US foreign policy in regard to this(and about some other things).

Israel has no right to claim all of Jerusalem as their capital, any more than The PLO terrorists do. Canada is not alone in how it treats this issue.

Where did you get those crazy ideas.

The Government of Israel, the Knesset, PM residence, President's residence, is all in Jerusalem.

There is no treaty of any kind. There is just the cowardice and anti Semitism of Governments, including that of the US to not recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital. And an unkept promise from George W Bush.

I take this personally because my American passport is similar to this Canadian's. The US refuses to acknowledge that I was born both in Jerusalem and in Israel.

Correction: The U.S. Congress voted in the 1990's to recognize that the capital of Israel is Jerusalem. It was an overwhelming vote in support of what it right. It's been the U.S. State Dept advising a succession of presidents to invoke an out clause. Each and every president campaigned on a platform of being the President to move the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem and each and every one of them reneged of his word. All countries in the world get to decide what city will be their own capital, except for the Jewish state. Everyone for thousands of years has knowns that Jerusalem is the center of Jewish life and religion. Shame on those who would try to thwart implementing the move to Jerusalem, which everyone knows is the Jewish capital.

There is no question about how much of Jerusalem is claimed.

The US didn't acknowledge Jerusalem as the capital of Israel before the 1967 war.

Why do you say AIPAC is at fault in this situation?

Ya, it is BS. There are plenty of cities in the world that fall on a border, but Jerusalem has this special status because it involves a "contentious" issue. The policies are inconsistent in the extreme.

You want to see really bad anti-semitism in Canada? Check out our New Democratic Party (they are socialists and proud - pro-union, pro-abortion, environazi, anti-free-market, anti-capitalism, anti-tabacco, etc). Anyway, part of their platform is to actively support Palestinians, regardless of their leadership or terrorist activity. They make no attempt to hide their hatred of the Israel.

The NDP is a stain.
