Vistula Lagoon blocked for sea traffic
9.05.2006
Russian authorities stopped traffic over the Vistula Lagoon, a decision read as yet another sign of the deteriorating diplomatic situation between Poland and Russia. According to a Russian statement the Russian side will not commence border controls until a "new agreement regulating seafaring on the Vistula Lagoon" is signed. Russia's decision will hit Polish and Russian shipowners offering connections between Polish ports and Kaliningrad.

Screw the Russian shipowners!!!
A genuine Russian must learn, that he should "ignore" Poland, doesn't he?.
If doesn't want to - Russian authorities are eager to help (sarcasm)

How did Russia end up with an enclave to the sea? If I were Poland and Lithuania I would simply invade it and annex it.

Hmmm... Vistula lagoon is not theirs to close - Koenigsberg harbor, OTOH, is. Probably they closed the shipping in their waters, otherwise it would not make much sense.

Take a look at the map in post #7.
See the narrow, little strait next to Baltijsk?
If they close this strait - the lagoon is closed too.

Russia pissed on every agreement of the Potsdam Conference. I don't see any reason why Kaliningrad should be allowed to exist.
It should be renamed back to Königsberg and all the commies kicked back across the real russian border.
Listen to this lovely description from a travel site:
Sandwiched between Lithuania and Poland, its fair to say no other part of Eastern Europe manages to court as much negative press as Kaliningrad: dubbed a corridor of crime, its perhaps better known for AIDS epidemics, drugs plagues, pollution and bleak tower blocks.
Busts of Marx still line streets, and its not rare to find hard core communists still picketing government buildings for a return to the old days.

To cut the strip [mostly sand] and provide a shipping outlet in sovereign waters should be a very simple dredging job, doable in a short time. Then one would need to build a bridge over the cut channel, or organize a ferry. Indeed it's strange to think that it has not been done already.

Re#14. More, the strip should be cut very close to the border, so that both banks of the shipping channel to be cut are under Polish sovereinty, but there is nothing but the border posts on the far bank - then the communication needs to the far bank will be minimal and one will not have to build an expensive bridge - small ferries would do.

Indeed it's VERY strange :-))))
But I've read today, that they are going to do it now.

Better late than never. Those who have neglected such an obvious need for 15 years are to be found and given a good enema.

"Indeed it's strange to think that it has not been done already."
There were plans to do that in 90's, but I think that the central government didn't find It important enough and local administration in that area rather don't have enough cash.
